The Old Folks Home

It's going to be another 98 degree scorcher out today. It lets up tomorrow, and we get some much needed rain.

It's been an interesting weekend.

The medical facility where Dd #1 works, put in for her to get her X-ray tech certification, so they signed her up. It was announced that the X-ray tech certification/re-certification training, and testing for all of Florida, would be held this weekend. She's been studying like crazy. They sent all the pertinent information. The X-ray certification team had booked the entire hotel for the weekend. The hotel they chose, provided both the rooms, and the area they would conduct the training/testing for everyone. They were to check in anytime after 3:30 pm on Friday, and start the training at 7:00 am on Saturday, in the named area.

The place is a few hours away, and she had to work on Friday. Her work considered her safety, and juggled things, so she got out of work around 3:00 pm. That way she wouldn't be driving alone, late at night, arriving at some ungodly hour to check in. She had most of her stuff packed, so she came home, tossed in those last few items that she'd need, and left.

She arrived a little before 10:00 pm, and went to check in at the front desk. Nope, no reservation for her, AND the hotel was booked, so she couldn't get a room. They were busy, and needed her to move along. She called me from the parking lot. I told her to stay right there in the parking lot, and do a Google search to see if there might be anything decent nearby. Considering it's prime tourist season in Florida right now, there might be nothing available. I reasoned that if nothing else, she could sleep in her car near the office, and probably be safe. She could go in the lobby to use their vending machines for water, or a snack, and to use their restroom facilities. Yes, there were 3 other halfway decent hotels. She called the first one, and got a room.

The next morning she went back to the first hotel, before 7:00 am, to check in for the training. The front desk told her there was no such event scheduled with them. By then, there were others arriving, and she overheard them inquiring about the same thing, and being told there was no such event scheduled. These people were sort of milling about, deciding their next move, when my daughter said she was going to the Wing, and room number that had been mentioned in the e-mail. Sure enough, the training team was set up.

She explained to one of the supervisors of the event, what was going on. By that time, others had come in with the same story. That caused a flurry of action. Apparently, at the hotel, there was a miscommunication between upper management, and everyone else.

First, they got things straightened out with the front desk. Then they got chewed out for not being helpful to so many lone women, coming in at night, thinking they had a reservation for this event, and the front desk couldn't be bothered with trying to help them get situated, or doing any further checking about it. Lastly, they will all get reimbursed for the entire trip, including gas, food, and lodging.
What a foul up. I hope they did chew out the front desk, royalty. That attitude will get you nowhere.

Yeah, I hope they laid into them. That "couldn't be bothered" bit is the part that is so unacceptable!

95° outside with a 4 mph breeze. Still feels like 99° but I think to me it feels more like 109°

That's what I'm preparing for !

I live in Oregon. Last summer was pretty ferocious, 2 or 3 periods when it was 110+ for a week.

That is hard on the birds, and hard on me.

I'm 66, so I hope I can post here !

I don't like "easy solutions" (which American consumer technology is full of).

I have been working on air conditioning solutions that don't use the conventional compressor tech. that is used in normal air conditioners.

Basically parking 1000+ pounds of water near the front door, in bottles, on shelves, and cooling that down in the early morning.

With an extra 500 pounds of water in the bedroom.

It's a lot like blowing cool morning air into the apartment, except, I'm using it to cool water.
