The Old Folks Home

Haahaa-- I have a Henry too! Was hoping for a Henrietta, but NOOOOOO a late blooming rooster.

Glad you have a home for him. Better get a start on those chicks so they will be ready to meet Henry in the spring.

I had a Henry, too, AND a Henrietta! He was rehomed a few months ago, still have her.

I agree with you Arielle, about the great Oz. I got it. Meds lose their effectiveness (desired benefits) when frozen. I still need to know if the frozen meds would be inert or harmful. I hate to waste the starter because I can't use it all right away. I have #100 and am only feeding one pea-chick at the moment. I am expecting a few chicks any day and about 30 keets in a week and a half, but still.... I had to buy 2 fifty pound sacks (one at 18% and one at 30% were my only choices) to be able to mix them to the right protein percentage.

SCG - If I freeze it, can I then feed it as un-medicated and can I then use additional meds without worrying about overdosing them? I would probably just be safe by not treating with something else, as long as it will not hurt to feed it to them after being frozen. Did I say that right? Make sense?

This is only my opinion, but I still wouldn't freeze it. Do you have any way of putting it into a more air tight holder? Think large tupperware, large ziploc bags, old popcorn tins...?

What is generally recognized is once a bag is open you want to use it within 6 months. I would extend that out further to 8 or 12 if you could get it into something that's not the original feed sack bag.

If you're sure you want to freeze it, give me the medication name(s) and I can do some research on degradation at work (on a break or before/after work, so not charging the taxpayers for my research... although you taxpayers generally owe me since I rarely take breaks and often work through lunch and before/after work - not complaining, it's my own choice most of the time!!)

My dad mailed me some organic Virginia peaches on Saturday. I was really excited about making some peach-cherry amaretto jam. Unfortunately the 4 days they were in the mail resulted in this (excuse my sweatpants):

My observation on the peaches: Apparently all branches of mail service treat our fragile packages the same (This was FedEx). I've seen countless posts regarding leaky packages of eggs arriving from USPS, and although this was sad, at least it wasn't eggs. Also, my father has obviously never packed eggs for shipping. Amateur.

Call the company you bought the feed from and ask them to call the feed company. THey have the professionals who know the ingredients and can best advise you on storage. Cool and dry is always good. and remember so many barns are not heated. All my feed is subject to ambient temperatures. I got tired of running into the feed bags in the house--though they did serve as ok end tables. We would just drop our coats on the bags.

I searched amprolium, back to the manufacturers pages, and the recommended temp is room temperature and tightly sealed. THis is the powder that is mixed into the grain or added to the water for treatment.

Oh, SCG, what a mess!

Reminds me of some of the plant shipments we have gotten. We got a shipment of Pansy plugs one time that gave the phrase "drop ship" a whole new meaning. I speculated that the pilot was in such a hurry, he didn't even land, they just pushed the boxes out and let them land on the runway!
