The Old Folks Home

DiDi, you Will, come back on here and let us know how things are in VA. Won't ya? When you get settled. We just know you will want to talk to us and let us know what's up! And, if you had a chance to get some chickens!

Cynthia, of course I will be checking in to BYC! I will have to get my chicken fix here until we can get a place of our own.

I figure we will have to rent somewhere for a while until the house here sells. I am hoping that it will sell fairly quick but I know that the real estate market around here is still really slow so it could be a while before we can buy something. Once we have our own place, I will have chickens and turkeys again. I know I am going to miss having them while we are waiting. Lots of large properties out in the area we are moving to so I am sure we will find something when the time comes.

Too bad I can't send you any turkey eggs to get started again.

DiDi..it was so good seeing you today. You are such a sweetheart. Glad I got a hug before you leave.
Both of those birds were squeaky clean, I didn't even bother putting any dust on them. (no surprise there)
I can't believe how big that brahma mix is..she's huge, sure has a sweet face. The pecking order..still going on. She tried first with my black Am..and I thought, oh oh, because she is real laid back, but no way..she fought back, so, that EE runs from her. Well, she does have the smaller red and Welsummer out there staying out of her way, so you are right, not at the top, and not at the bottom. I can't get over her pattern, just beautiful. Anyway, I went out once it was dark to make sure I got her put up on a roost...no problem, she found a spot. :) Now, the anticipation of the color of the egg!
My friend just loves the other one. That EE has kind of a cute voice, high and squeaky at times. Love the color in the neck!

I sure hope your place sells fast. It sounds wonderful. Just the right person will come along and be so excited that everything they need for their animals is right there!

I appreciate my internet more than ever now that it is back after a week!

dsqard, I hope your house sells quickly.

Wisher, how is that puppy?

It's been raining like crazy here yesterday and today (and probably tomorrow, too). Cold, too. Got the fire going and I've been chiseling away at the 20-some pounds of apples I picked. Finally got down to 6 apples left! Got some apple cranberry jam done yesterday and just started apple butter today which probably won't be ready to can until late tonight or tomorrow after work.

However, I digress.

I present you with exhibit A: the only things dumb enough to be out in this weather (besides me taking a quick picture and the waterfowl which think this is just the best weather, ever):

Don't they look miserable?

Edited to add: does anyone else see Jay Leno in the rock on the right?

SCG, enjoyed your photo. I only have chickens, and they are staying in and peering out

. It's been quite dry here, but rain has set in for a couple of days.

I have longed for some pears to can and was offered some today!

What are you making with your pears? I have a recipe for pear-ginger jam that looks divine. You should try it for me!

I think I'm going to go back and get another big bag of apples next weekend. I want to make some more apple cranberry jam, then I found a recipe for apple pumpkin butter (although, unfortunately it needs to be frozen, not canned).

I am totally addicted to canning things. I could have a worse addiction, I suppose. I think everyone is going to get gifts of canned goods this year for Christmas.

I should think you could can that apple pumpkin if you did it in a pressure canner. Still, I think most freezer jam tastes better because it's not cooked so much...it seems to retain more of the flavors of the fruit.

We scored 3 big grocery bags of pears a couple days ago, yippee! They've been pretty scant around our neck of the woods this year and I was thinking I wouldn't be able to find any. Think Im going to do some caramel vanilla sauce and several butters with different flavorings.

Sheesh, I was down to where all I had left was potatoes and sweet potatoes...and was patting myself on the back because they could wait just a few days. Then we got a bunch more apples and the pears...plus DH talked me into making a big ole pot of chili to can so...my kitchen will be a permanent wreck for at least another couple weeks, LOL.
