The Old Folks Home

I googled Perry's Nut house--guess that is still there. Changed hands at one point. and they have added items of interest.

Led me to a website Roadside America .com--oodles of places to visit.

Was I on there?

That would explain the tour bus activity.

Now wait, did you really just say that?? Love the humor..just love it on here...we've lived long enough to make fun of ourselves, and not even care. Why? Because it doesn't matter, and we know who we are.

It's a lovely 3 day weekend here. Although I said I was done canning, BF and I picked 40 more pounds of apples today at the orchard. I do have to admit that we gave 20 to his mom, so we only got 20 more pounds of apples. He's great to bring to the orchard. All the apples left at my height looked terrible. So I just started pointing and saying "I want THAT one" to my 6'4" BF.

I got a pint of honey from a guy I work with yesterday, and had some with a cut up apple a few minutes ago and it was amazing. Makes me want bees. That will probably be the next thing I add to my homestead.

Got some apple butter in the crockpot again, got some stew simmering and about ready to make some bread. Have a ton of chores this weekend, and I swear it can't get better than this. I'm not a believer, but I do think (chronic) idleness is bad.

SCG--sure sounds like fall has arrived! Tall helpers are wonderful-- DH is 6'5". Fortunately most of the trees at the newrby orchard are small semidwarf trees and my kids can reach the tops of those; the standard trees are still a challenge. It is cheaper to buy bags of apples at the orchard store than go picking. Thanks for the reminder to go buy honey down the street. Local honey to help with the allergies. Still need help with chicken allergies though.

THe leaves are coming down fast here-yellow, pale greens and by the end of tomorrow many more will be on the ground. Peak foliage is here. THe wet rainy weather and the cold has arrived.

I try to hold out until the end of OCtober before firing up the wood stove. All depends on the weather. ANd this year I still have one heat lamp on a goup, mob?, of turkey poults. DH and I are to work on their coop this weekend-- if the weather co operates. Until they are out of the house, the heat lamp is on.

Guess this weather is heading Northeast, as usual.

Here too :( I finally had to break down and turn the furnace on, dang it! I tend to like it cool, especially at night, but 62 is a bit chill even for me. DH got the oats all harvested from our little patches out front, so the girls will have some nice treats through the winter, and brought in all the potted plants. We had snow yesterday...fortunately it all melted as it landed, but it's sure a sign of things to come. I'm hoping to get the last few things out of the garden today and fence it off so we can move the girls onto it for the winter. Might as well let them prep the soil for spring, right?

Need to get some patches of winter rye and wheat down for next year as well. I was down to just potatoes (reg and sweet) to can, but they had a really good sale on beef yesterday, so we came home with quite a lot of that I need to process as well. They had a good sale on salmon as well and after mulling it over I think we'll go grab up some of that to can as well. Gotta get at it since my kitchen is a real disaster and once all the canning is done, I can finally get all that stuff put away!

We've even gotten some cool temps down here as well, at least for us, and it is wonderful! I love the October blooms, though the names of some of the flowers escape me. The spider lilies are red, and there are pink and lavender wildflowers, plus the yellow daisy-like flowers that bloom profusely this time of year. The pineapple sage's red blooms still attract the occasional hummingbird and the elaeagnus is loaded with the most sweet-smelling blooms you can imagine, so the honey bees enjoy that.
