The Olive-Egger thread!

Ok, I'm confused now! I do realize that it would only be the female, pea comb offspring of an EE and Welsummer (or other brown egg layer) cross that would result in an olive egg layer. But I thought that if the EE roo had a pea comb, it meant that he carries the gene for blue-green eggs. Is there no way to tell whether the EE roo is carrying the gene (other than trying to breed offspring and see the results)?

Really, I don't know if I will keep the EE roo or not. I am waiting to see if he develops into more of a gentleman (he's only 10 weeks). We do not free-range, so a rooster seems unnecessary unless I decide to breed him. And I will only breed him if there is a way to know if he carries the blue-green gene. Is the pea comb only a sign of the gene in females?
Thanks for any help!

Apparently the smartest girl in my entire flock is Miss Olive. It has been a heat wave here. I keep water containers all over the place, and lots of them, to encourage them all to drink and cool off in them. Miss Olive is always in keeping cool, but I have only seen a couple others follow her lead. (Miss Olive is my Olive Egger from Wynette's eggs, hatched Halloween 2009).

The pea comb is not directly tied to the blue egg gene , supposedly the marker for a pea comb lies close to the one for blue eggs and seems to be a good indicater when crossing EE to single combed chickens . Several breeds have pea combs but do not lay blue eggs , and some blue eggers have single combs . Not all EE hens with pea combs lay blue eggs . Test breeding is the only way to know for sure unless they've come up with a DNA test .

I can't wait until my Olivia is grown up like Miss Olive. She's also from Wynette. She's already pretty, but when she fills out... Miss Olive is beautiful!

Thanks! Oh, I think Wynette creates great Olive Eggers! This girl lays such a dark egg, and she has missed maybe one or two days (total) since she began laying. I love her. I know you are gonna be happy with your Olivia!

I have two gorgeous olive egger roos that were hatched from Sonew123's flock that are still available if anyone is interested sadly I do pick up only or will drive to a reasonable location, but I don't ship.

I've had such horrible luck with hatching eggs, but I've finally determined my problem, my temp was too high, ugh. Anyways so I didn't get any of Wynette's gorgeous eggs to hatch, so very sad:hit. But I am happy to report I did have one OE hatch from gvntofly05 eggs.

A little blue and copper chick, named Copper.

So I am officially in the club. And I have more OE (from gvntofly05) in the bator, after all my issues have been sorted out.
