The Olive-Egger thread!

le neige - there are several folks on this thread that are attempting to do this, I believe, but I don't recall who

so I'm looking forward to hearing replies, also!

ETA: I mean, sooner or later, you're going to mess up the egg color if you breed to a darker laying line or a green laying line, right? So I would THINK that if you can get the color set, that's when you'd want to use an olive egger cockerel to keep that egg color consistent.

I will be using my olive egger cockeral for breeding. I'm going to cross him with BCM's, pure Ameraucana's and a Wellie girl that will be out of my breeding pen.(She doesn't fit the standard, but lays a dark speckled egg) I just want to see what he produces in offspring. I'll mark the chicks as they hatch for where they came from and see what comes out best. Who knows, maybe I'll get neat-o eggs!

Next year I'm starting my Wheaten/Blue Wheaten Olive Egger project, I eventually plan on using an Olive Egger rooster for the pairings. It all depends on how "olive-y" the egg color is though. I'm sure I'll have to cross back to Ameraucana (for green) and Penedesenca (or Marans, haven't decided what I'll use at first for the darker colors) at some point to strengthen the pigment.

I'm also going to attempt to "standardize" an Olive Egger line, somehow. I think a Wheaten/Blue Wheaten bird that lays an olive colored egg would be gorgeous!

Man, it's going to be SO MUCH FUN watching all the projects coming up and the pullets beginning to lay next year! I absolutely can't wait to see what folks are doing!

New2 - I'm SURE you'll get some "neat-o" eggies!

urban - a wheaten/blue wheaten olive egger would ROCK! Put me on your list for eggies NOW, please, for when they are perfected!

Here's one of my olive egger roosters - he's not in the breeding pen, only roos in there are pure French Black Copper Marans, a Blue Copper Marans and a "Bethel" rooster that has the "look" I'm going for but I'm thinking of putting this guy in cause he's just so darn gorgeous. Every time I see him from across the yard I say to myself "theres a gorgeous Marans" but then he turns around and I see his comb but he's really so beautiful and shiny. Wish I could have gotten a shot of his breast because it's the most amazing shiny solid black.

I'm very excited! I wish I had been able to get an earlier start... but I was absolutely forbidden to buy any more eggs/chicks this year.

So I'm working with what I've got for now, and I'll be working towards moving forward with the Wheaten project first thing next spring. It's a good thing we have mild winters here in CA, I'm going to start hatching as soon as the first frost breaks!!!

ETA: And duh, I'd love to share my eggs with you and with whoever else would like a shot at this "variety".

I'm going to breed this pullet to a BCM one more time, and then to a couple of Olive Egger Makers, and keep track of the resulting pullets' eggs from each group.
