The Olive-Egger thread!

Wow....this thread is really interesting. I will be honest and tell u I have only read the first 10 pages...I will continue reading, but it all makes my head spin.
I am interested in getting olive eggs and pink ones.
These r the chicken I have:

1 EE Roo. Very handsome. Red and green body with burnt orange and gold hackles....has a strawberry or pin cushion kinda comb.
Black Jersey Giant Roo
NH Red Roo
Dark Cornish roo

Hens:
black giants
Black austrolorps
Barred rocks
Red stars
Black stars
Buff Orps
NH Reds
Sl Wyandotts
Ameracauna (probably a version of EE, I got at local co-op not a breeder) aren't laying yet--not sure on egg color. At least one is pea combed--the other 2 might be single, they are still so young. One is definitely bearded and muffed.
I also have white leghorns..Roo and hens... Just FYI.
Anyway:: can I get olive and pink colored eggs with these chickens...if so...help me out with the combinations... And be gentle--don't make it so difficult on my brain!!

Thanks DMRippy

SUPER excited! Setting my first eggs from my EE/OE Roo over a wheaten Marans hen!! Her egg color is lovely 6s
and 7s. Can't wait to see the babies. Hes a BCM Roo x black ameraucana hen! Now all I have to do is wait 21 days and then another 20+ weeks to see what egs will follow....

You can get lucky and get a light olive/sage green from the EE's. You will not be able to get a dark olive without using a dark brown bird in your pairings. RIR/Production Reds are not dark brown.

You have to get really lucky to get pink. Pink is not a color you can breed for, it equates to a poor quality brown layer.

Good luck!

I have one of those (poor brown layer)... I adopted a black chicken from someone who couldn't keep her anymore. She is all black with single comb and white ears. I thought she was a Minorca...but when she started laying they weren't white...they are a creamy...very light tan. I figured she must b a cross breed of some kind...

If a person was to start a project to breed true and wanted yard candy what is the best options?

These are my options
Roos
Black/Blue or Splash Copper Marans
Wheaten Ameraucana
Pretty EE kinda Columbian or Silver looking with some gold bleeding through
Hens
Olive Egger (not laying yet but close)
EE various colors
FBCMarans

I was thinking a Maran Roo x EE hen (maybe the blue or splash roo x Blue ee probably a true Ameraucana hen)
and the Wheaten roo x olive egger or EE then breeding a select few from each mating to each other or to the other groups parents but that is as much as I understand. What would I do next? or should I do something different?

I know to cull anything other than a pea comb and I would also cull the not pretty birds to just layers. I have three Olive Eggers one is white with feathered legs, one is all EE in the front and Marans in the back and I can't remember the other on of the top of my head.

Any suggestions or instructions welcomed.

I would like to start this in the fall so they would be laying next spring to start the next generation

The problem with most EE is that they already are a mixed breed, so they almost always won't breed true. Unless you know the parentage, you never know what you will get. I would try the BBS maran over the blue Am hen that you have, if she is pure it shouldn't be a problem. The wheaten over the others should give you some interesting color combonations, but just know that the next generation will have alot of different looks. Some of my best "eye candy" comes from not knowing the parentage, sometimes half the fun is not knowing what they will look like when they grow up. Problem I had is most of them were roos.

Well, the dozen eggs I ordered from alicefelldown are under a broody and just waiting to hatch, LOL.

Didn't want to fire up the incubator and this poor broody has been trying to hatch eggs for 2 weeks, LOL. I just keep taking them away and she refuses to give up so I thought I would make her happy.

I just love chicks that are raised by a brody anyway- they seem to be smarter and healthier from the start.
