The Olive-Egger thread!

You're right, she's horrible. You better send her to me quick.

I'm certainly not an expert, but I'd use her in the olive egger pen.

Here's my first olive egger. I had split an order with The Warden for pure ameraucana babies and she gave me some BCM babies and this little olive egger from Ruth's eggs. I hope she's a girl, she's just the cutest thing.

AWE! Cute little one you have there! Okay, so my girl I was hoping was my first 2nd gen olive egger FINALLY blessed me with an egg yesterday! It's really pretty, though hard to get a true color pic of. In person, it's almost a goldish-olive...it has the sheen of a good Marans egg over it, which I think is causing it to appear golden olive. It's really pretty, but being her first egg, I'm sure the color will change a bit as all my olive eggers tend to. Here's her egg, with her momma's egg to the left, and a tan Silver Penciled Plymouth Rock egg to the right for comparison:

And an "extreme close-up" of the olive egg:

I'll post a new pic after she's laid several eggs so we can get a comparison of them all. How exciting!

Here is one of my F2 Olive Eggers (BCM x Ameraucana, then x BCM again)...

Of the 9 of these F2s I hatched, only two have pea combs. I'm thinking that maybe it would be ideal to alternate breeding the successive generations back to Ameraucanas and Marans in order to keep both the blue and the dark egg genes well-represented(?). At this rate, the pea combs are nearly lost by F2. Now I need an Ameraucana roo.

Here are the eggs...

The blue one in the middle would have been an F1, but it never developed. The others are F2s (the peeps inside them, that is...the eggs themselves were laid by F1s). I would have expected the F1s' eggs to be darker than that, but whatev'.

That's interesting, Dread; I've never hatched a single in any of my olive eggers, only peas thus far.

What color Ameraucana did you use?

ETA: the upper left-hand egg in my avatar is another of my F1 olive egger eggs; a bit greener than some I've seen; I've been wondering what a "true blue" Ameraucana egg crossed would look like, yours seem to be a bit lighter green than my F1, but I would think crossed back to a Marans roo, the resultant pullets would lay a more olive green egg, whereas mine pictured above is a golden-brown-green. Yours should be very pretty, I would think!

Hi Wynette!

I don't know what color the Ameraucana was...these eggs came from somebody else. I think I'm about 65% of the way to being allowed to have roosters, then it's on!
