The Olive-Egger thread!

My very first olive eggs are hatching this very moment. Two have pipped and hopefully will out of their shells soon. I can't wait to see what these chicks look like. I had no idea if they were fertile and/or developing or not. Candling reveals nothing since the shell is so dark. Now I'm thinking I should breed these chicks back to a BCM to get even darker eggs??????

Here's the basket of eggs I just took to incubator.

WOW Ruth that is the prettiest basket of olive green eggs I have seen. I haven't read to the end of this thread yet but can't wait so will ask my question. I understand crossing the dark brown over blue eggs to get the olive green. My question is does anyone know what you get if you breed the olive eggers to each other? Does the egg color breed true or doew it get darker or lighter? Just wondering if you have to go back to the brown or blue egg layer? Thanks

How exciting!! Hope you have a great hatch!!

hello everyone,
I just wanted to share that I just candled Young Olive Eggers and I got 10 out of 10 that ar growing great.
I can't wait till they hatch. these chicks will be croosed with Blue Jersey Giants (they are laying med Brown eggs)
I hope to get bigger eggs and hens from these. I am Hatching Brichen Marans for making more Olive Eggers.
Now the OEL are in with my Lavender AM's. I have one that lays a brownish Olive that I hope with this cross will lighten her chicks eggs a little.
the oel's are due the 14th.

Nice eggs qball53

Sorry to hear that and Good luck I hope they hatch for you.

I've been getting an egg like this, but only on half of it. It's from my Welsummer. It's the part that's coated with blume that looks purplish/pink. I'll have to try to get a picture of it.

Well, purple as I've known. . . It's a plum color really. It's an extra coating like on your egg but on a Marans egg:

My Wheaten Marans girls lay these frequently.

They are pretty, aren't they?

I got some Olive Eggers that hatched out of Wheatens with purple eggs, bred to Araucanas also with consistent chalky eggs, and so far the F1's have consistent chalky green eggs. I'm hoping down the road the single-combed offspring will lay an even more consistent purple than the original Marans, due to the Araucana being introduced. The current owner of the F1 OE's is hatching out some F2's. . . I can't wait til they lay!!

You know you're in serious trouble when you go to bed at night thinking of chickens and dreaming about them. I have some blue/splash marans in the incubator now, and last night I dreamed I put them in a pen with my blue Ameraucana roo to make OEs.

I woke up thinking, "I'm going to have to do that!"

My first olive eggers ever just hatched! Still too wet to see if they got any tufts from their papa (a purepred LF Araucana). But they sure are adorable little goobers!
