The Olive-Egger thread!

Question...
When I hatched out my olive eggers, I hatched out some Welsummer chicks as well. My Welsummer rooster is the father to all the eggs of this hatch. When it comes time to breed back to the dark egg gene, can I use one of these Welsummer offsping or is that not a good idea since the pullet and roo have the same dad? Reason I'm asking is because 1) I don't have a clue and 2) One of the Welsummer cockerels from this hatch is turning out to be quite gorgeous and I would like to keep him.

Thanks for you help and opinions.

Yep, puffy cheeks are called muffs. The whole set is usually considered muffs and beard, but some also just call it bearded.

It's perfectly fine to go back to mom or dad, it's called line-breeding. As long as they have no health issues or no other traits you don't want.

So I got my first egg from one of my Olive-eggers that I bred myself. She has an Araucana father and a Black Copper Marans mom. She has a pea comb. The egg is a light tan.

I am so disappointed. It is not even dark brown. Not sure what this means. I have one more pullet the same age that has not laid an egg yet. Does this mean I will not get olive eggs from my roo? I have him in a breeding pen with my Marans at the moment. I plan on hatching lots of eggs from them once the girls start laying. So frustrating. Should I give up on this roo?

Is it possible that your araucana is not really? Could he be an EE? Was your marans hen around any other roosters for the 3 to 4 weeks before you paired them up? Are you positive the egg you got is from that pullet? Just throwing ideas out there..

He is a true Araucana. He came from a breeder. My pullet I am pretty sure came from him considering that she is rumpless just like him. What I find strange is how light the egg is.

Maybe the paint factory hasn't started working at full capacity yet poularde? Her next few eggs might be darker?

I'll cross my fingers for you.

a few of the OEs i just hatched...these are from 2 non-standard Ameracaunas X FCBM roo.

two babies from a pure ameracauna roo X FBCM hen--these guys are SO FAT and cheeky.

2 of 4 babies i got out my super deep green olive layer (hen who laid eggs in my avatar). These are from her bred back to the sire FBCM. 2 more like this are in the bator getting fluffy.

Darling chicks, beautiful eggs. Can't wait to see what I get out of my Blue Copper Marans girls covered by my B/B/S AMs. Thisis my first attempt at OEs & the Marns eggs are pretty dark so I don't know howmuch of that blue AM is going to come through....We'll see.

Well, tried to take some pics of my Olive Egger babies today but they just weren't having it! These pics were taken with my camera phone and not very good, but thought I would post anyway.
