The Olive-Egger thread!

Very nice!
I totally forgot about white when planning my colorful egg basket. We need white just to help show off the other colors right?

This past Christmas I was doing a lot of baking and my hens were not really laying so I had to break down and buy a dozen white eggs. My 3 1/2 year old daughter who has only ever seen our own colorful eggs saw the white eggs on the counter and squealed "oooo pretty!". Lol... she had never seen white eggs so those seemed unusual to her...not our pretty blues, greens and browns. lol
My brown leghorn lays me a large white egg almost everyday. I had a golden campine that was one of my very favorite hens. She always came up for a cuddle and was a prolific layer of white eggs. Sadly, she was eaten by something.

Well, now I have Olive Egger fever.

And it's gonna be MONTHS before I can get more chicks! My first little sweeties aren't even here yet, lol. Oh well, time to start saving for an incubator, and practicing my "it'll be a good education for the kids" speech to convince DH I'm not loony.

MM - maybe you'll get lucky and one of your hens will go broody for you this fall....that's how I originally got my DH to agree to more chicks. Nothing is more sad than a broody with nothing to hatch!

I wish one of mine would go broody. No one looks interested. I be telling the Brahams and Cochins that is what I got them for, but I don't think they believe. Probably what will happen is everyone will go broody and I will have no eggs to hatch. I have an Amish friend working on my breeder pens and that will take 2 weeks. I have way too may roosters. :(

That would be so great! Maybe if I just slip some eggs under a broody hen and then tell DH it's a miracle when they hatch.

Does anyone here have Ameracauna/Welsummer mixed Olive Eggers? or just Ameracauna/Marans crosses? I would LOVE to see pictures of some Amera/Welsummer olive eggers. I bought 2 pullets this year(welsummer) with the intention of hunting down a good Ameracauna roo next year to breed them to. I haven't had any luck seeing pictures of this kind of OE yet though. =(

There are some here and there. (wellie crosses) Ameraucana x Marans is THE most common combo out there though. Most people do Blue Am x BC Marans, there's a slowly rising popularity in Wheaten Am x Wheaten Marans as well. Black Copper Marans x Ameraucana = Black birds with slight leakage, possible blues if you use blue Am's. If you use Buff Am's you may get dun birds, but most will have a lot of leakage.

Ameraucana x Welsummer = Clean shanked birds with slight beard/muffs, color depends on the Ameraucana. If you use a Wheaten you get slight Welsummer colored offspring but females will have pale breasts. If you use Black, Blue, Splash, White, or Lavender you get black (or blue) with leakage, they'll resemble Black Coppers. If you use Buff, you'll get black tailed Buffs or straight Buffs. If you use Silver, you'll get golden and silver duckwing colors with pale breasts. If you use Brown-Red (VERY rare) you'll get more brown-red looking birds.

If you want great egg color though, best hunt down a Wheaten or Blue Wheaten Ameraucana. They give the best chances for the richest blue of eggs. But be sure to get an Am, not an EE!

Oh, sorry Bleenie. I see now that you wanted a photo of the hen, not her egg! :p

I do not have a true Ameraucana, so I used an EE roo for my cross, and the hen looks just like a Welsummer, but with muffs.

Glad you posted that I was admonished last week for suggesting that one hen laid different colored eggs but here's a pic of two eggs from one hen within two days time. I have her separated with a bcm roo so I know for sure they can only be her eggs.

I'd normally ask how too, but, it happens. Now as for their avatar I don't think so with them, but that's a good representation (minus white) of what I mean.

I hope Phage doesn't mind I post this, this is his photo of an array of eggs one OE pullet laid, hatched from my F1 breeding. Crazy.
