The Olive-Egger thread!

ok guys ,can i get your opinions?
i have
1.blue wheaten olive egger roo-parents are blue wheaten ameraucana/black copper hen
he has a beard and light led feathering
i have some hens to breed him to but which do you guys think and what egg color would result?

1.black copper marans
2.wheaten/blue wheaten ameraucanas
3.olive eggers
4.Easter eggers

i am thinking the Black coppers because wouldn't everything else create Easter eggers with the egg color being varying shades of green?

thanks for the help

Don't discount a bird from your OE program just because it has a straight comb! I have a girl laying a beautiful, super dark, green/gold egg who has a straight comb. You just never know. I have read many times that about 95% of blue-egg-gened birds display a pea comb, but I have also seen (on BYC) a bunch of birds that are clearly OEs with a straight comb. I have posted and asked about it several times with little or no response. It is fascinating though!

Hello everyone been a while but i wanted to share a few of my OE project chicks.
They are Blue Jersey Giant ( have a few with good dark eggs)

This is the one of the ones I like best so far.

I know he is a single comb but i want to keep him just to see what h ends up like

The feather hanging down was from me when we moved them into the grow out coop. Was not happy about it.

I have a few younger ones like this with the muffs & beard.
She had a bread at hatch so I hope it will fill in sooner or later.

on this one it's a mix of dark blue and black. the black is the lacing.

You just need to put those same hens & roo together! You will get more wheatens.

I just know it.
I wonder what your OE roo with my girls will make. Did he come from the same cross as mine?
lol.
hi think he really wants to come live with you.

i would if i had OE girls that looked like yours but remember ,i didn't hatch any like that.

Thanks HaTHOR
He so just so striking that I wanted to hang onto him.
I have thought about that to. As the marans used to get the oe and you keep breeding back to them.
My main goal right at this point is try to get some size to my oe and hopefully better then the large eggs they lay now.
Have you ever breed one of your Javas to a oe that has a dark gren Brn color?
I just wonder is with the Javas lighter color eggs if it would lighten it just a tad? If you take those pullets and breed them back to a marans or oe rooster that it would on some balance out the. Color just right.
Anyway I'm very happy with my cross since they are turning out the way I wanted so far.

I would try him with the Olive Eggers too. Are you looking for a certain color of Olive? are you looking for a "Look" in the Olive Eggers? Wheaten Olive Eggers with feathered legs and beards and muffs and GREAT Olive Color would be cool. Olive Eggers to Olive Eggers can make for some good egg color. JMHO

Agreed - Olive Egger x Olive Egger is the funnest and most unpredictable route, you can get anything from blue to dark brown and everything between. Adding Marans to Olive Egger is also nice, as you get darker eggs. Adding a blue or green layer gets more odd olive shades or more minty green shades.

yes ,he is from the same cross but i don't know which exact hen.i am going to try something with them and i will let you know what happens.;)i may have to send you some eggs to help out.lol

DMRippy-yes,i think i want to go for a wheaten olive egger line.Lark Rise hatched some wheaten hens that look just like wheaten Ameraucanas from this same cross so just tinkering around with an idea.lol

Illia-good to know about he shades.i thought OExOE would be steady in color.thanks for the heads up
i want a constant color.

thanks everyone,
D

Most of them will be somewhat steady but you will get variety. I just hatched out some OE x OE and got a single combed one (very likely pure brown or dark brown layer) plus several versions of pea comb, meaning I'll have several shades of green, blue, or even a golden color.

OE's can be worked til they breed true, but it takes patience and plenty of birds. I believe some people like Ruth have been working a decently steady color for years now. I personally am working on a true-breeding color too, but I'm shooting for something GREEN. I do like seeing the golden ones though, they're awesome.

With good egg color comes type too though. Olive Eggers are just mutts but I prefer a good dual purpose bird with a well filled carcass, good color that isn't just BBS or Wheaten, and above all, a bird that doesn't have a squirrel tail, pinched tail, chopped-off looking rumpless butt, or a tail that breaks at the base, as in, there is no smooth curve from the back to the tail. Don't like it.
