The Olive-Egger thread!

Did you know in England they don't refrigerate their eggs? If I'm not sure of the aige of the eggs because the hens have been hording in new place, I cook them up for the dogs and chickens.

I lived in Italy for 2 years they didn't chill them either. Buy them right off the shelf in the baking isle lol. If I'm going to bake I leave some out a day or two. But, for Gretchen to have 13 eggs and I know she isn't an every day layer. That is a lot too long for me. The opossums and what ever critter wants them can have them. My 4 yr old girl loves to toss them at the trees in the creek. A sad dry creek atm. I'm hoping for that tropical storm to come our way!.

I hear the weather repoart for the southern region--in a drought. We were short by 6-7 inches of rain, but have been able to get that number to about 5 with a couple days of moderate rains. I hope you get some rain soon. Until then, toss eggs at the trees! I have dogs that like to eat them or back to the chickens.

2-3 week old eggs out in the heat

The dog,cat and chickens get the cracked eggs. I scramble them shell and all!

OK I have 2 Olive Egger Roos I am growing up, what do you think.... I will only eventually keep on, but want some opinions on the offspring.

This first one, he LOOK 100% Black Ameraucana EXCEPT the Fabulous feathered legs....better than most of my Marans LOL Great beard and muff too boot. The Blue guy next to him is my second Roo. He looks Marans with copper on his hackles. He has a beard and muff, but not as good and the black. His leg feathering is pretty good too. I think he was one of the Brown Olive Eggers I hatched from my Olive Eggers. He has a twin sister too with a pea comb too.

I would like colorful babies, but I also really want a good beard and muff and feathered legs...... Who would you pick and why?

Someone told me that it was only the male who carried the blue egg gene so you had to use an Ameracauna male on brown egg females to get olive eggs. I have a Marans roo that I was going to put on my Ameracauna hens - she said that wouldn't work. Has anyone had this experience, or (even though this person is very chicken knowledgable) is she mistaken? Can't you get olive eggs no matter whether it's roo over hen or vice versa?

I don't know but will tell when I am sure because I have a Marans roo over easter eggers and will set some eggs in a couple weeks.

Make no difference! The key to olive eggers is the pea comb. If keep the birds with pea combs you increase you chances of olive eggs. I have Marans Roos over EE and Olive Eggers. I still get pea combs.
