The Olive-Egger thread!

Hi everyone!
Trying my best to sort out chicken genetics, lol. I am still a little confused on the blue gene inheritance & correlation with the pea comb - I just got two OE chicks which are from a Blue Ameraucana roo over a BC Marans hen...they are already a couple weeks old and neither appears to have a pea comb (furthermore my pure Ameraucana chick doesn't seem to have a pea comb either. Does that mean she is not a pure Ameraucana? OR maybe I'm just not experienced enough to tell at this point since they are still young?). Of the two OE, one appears to *maybe* be a cockerel (hardly any feather growth compared to the other, and heavier legs), but again I am new to this so I may be jumping to conclusions. I read earlier in the thread that the first generation cross will all have the blue gene, but the second generation is where I need to pay attention to pea comb or not pea combed...I plan to set some OE eggs and hopefully get a few chicks so that I can put them together and *hopefully* produce a second generation OE, but still not sure if I have the right idea about which to cull and which to keep...any help would be greatly appreciated!!

Well we just had several pic of Olive Eggers with straight combs. So if you can don't cull till they lay. Pea Combs are Dom. It only takes one copy for the pea comb to express. Not all Ams or EE have 2 copies of the Pea Comb gene. Ams should have 2 copies, but they don't always. If they had 2 copies they would pass the pea comb genes to ALL off spring, but the chicks would only have one copy. The pea comb gene is close to the blue egg genes and they USUALLY travel together, but not always.

So I went out to check on some of my chickens. We have 6 coops and I was looking in on my little cochin whos gone broody, and this is what I found......

Not sure who it came from, I have two in this one coop. I was just so excited!!

Hehe, I read the last few pages but didn't go back far enough, but thanks I will stop worrying and just wait to see what they lay

Question from a wanna-be olive egger --- I have a heritage RIR roo -- if I cross him on my Ameracauna hens, will I get olive - eggers? Thanks in advance for any opinions.
These are not for anything other than my own personal flock stock.

I only got a green eggs, not olive. To get a TRUE Olive Egg you MUST use a dark egg layer like a Marans.

I finally got some olive eggs!! These are actually a marans rooster over an easter egger hen. She has just a beautiful colored egg. I think I have 3 laying so far. I have a batch of girls growing up now that had marans momma with ameraucana daddy. Those will be cool!
