The Olive-Egger thread!

The roo or the hen can be either. It is the genetic you want to make olive eggers. I have been using a dark egg roo over green egg layers. I am going to do the opposite in the spring. My marans pullets/hens are going in with my Ameraucanas. Later in the fall I am probably going to use a Lavender Am roo x Marans and then another pen with a CCL x Marans..... we will see what happens.

Either combo should work.... Pea Combs are really the ones I would keep for Olive Eggs, really they are your best shot at olive. NOT A GUARANTEE either way though. I have Pea combs laying brown eggs.... well I did.... I sold her today.

Has anybody on here croosed a gold cuckko maran roo, with an ameracuana hen(any variety)???? what were your results? can you post pics of chicks and adults if you have them? do they produce the olive eggs?

The roo will pass the barring on to 100% of the chicks (if your roo has 2 copies of the barring genes) My guess is the chicks would look like a GCM.... depending on the color of the Am hen...... EE hen is a different story. They should produce a lighter Olive Egg.... not a real dark one. Again the pea combs are best.

but the ameraucanas have pea combs. why wouldn't it be dark? How do you get it good and dark?

Cuckoos don't lay as dark an egg as a BCM. You really need a DARK layer. Most Cuckoos only lay a little bit darker than a brown egg layer. The darker the layer the better on the color.
