The Olive-Egger thread!

One was hatched this morning and 4 more had pips!

Hi everyone! New to the thread. I hatched out 2 olive eggers (Wheaten Ameracauna x BCFM) for the Easter Hatch. I am trying to determine sex. They are now feathering in quite nicely with nearly black feathers with brown lacing... Any idea if they are hens or roos? Both have a single comb, but it is very small still... I'll try to post pics later, but from this description, does anyone have any idea?

I'd like to see that photo.
I have a chick from a recent mixed hatch that seems to be black with brown tips.

Here is a picture of the mystery sex chicken! It is a little bit larger than the rest at this age, and seems to stand a little more upright as well compared to the others. In the pictures, it is a little bit difficult to see the brown, but in all reality, it is pretty blended in. From far away it just looks black. (Sorry for the poor pictures.)

So glad I found this thread. We are planning on starting our olive egger project next spring from the breeds we just recently hatched. I would love to hear your opinions on which Rooster we should keep for this project. They are all still young but so far it appears we have a white Marans boy, and a 2nd generation Olive Egger boy (looks like a black Australorp as a chick).
The hens it will be over are...

2 lavender/blue EE's- from blue eggs
2 dark brown EE's that are already laying and lay a light blue and light green egg.
1 black ameracuna- from a blue egg
1 white marans girl
1 2nd generation olive egger- looks like it will have a barred wheaten coloring

I think it would probably be best to keep just one Roo. Do any of your have opinions on which one would be best to keep for the project? We would like to produce some pretty birds with pretty eggs in a variety of olive colors. There is no one in our area with olive eggers and I think with the popularity of keeping backyard chickens we could make a little money on this.... at least enough to cover a bag of feed or two.

Thanks in advance!

Keep the Marans, you'll need his dark egg genes in subsequent generations to continue to deepen the hue of your olive eggs. You can always hatch another Olive Egger boy from your Marans and other birds if you ever want to replace him as your main flock sire.

Also, you don't know what color(s) are hidden underneath the White in your Marans roo, which could mean you could end up with some unexpected and interesting offspring when breeding him to the above mentioned hens. Most likely he is carrying Barring. If he is dominant White you could get some pretty color combinations from the breeding due to the way the other colors/patterns "leak" when bred to white.

For example... these dom. White OEs belong to CrazyCatNChickenLady.
