The Olive-Egger thread!

I responded last year to an ad for "free rooster" when I called she said she had 1/2 Araucana and 1/2 Barred Rock roos, so I went to get one. Turned out she had ONE Roo that was 1/2 Ameraucana & 1/2 Barred Rock! Well I put her with a Barred Rock Hen and ended up with six pullets that reached maturity. Three of them are jet-black & three look like their momma. I'm getting both olive & brown eggs out of these girls but I haven't figured out which are doing what!

I bet it wasn't even half Ameraucana - But half Easter Egger.

Especially with the fact that some eggs are olive, some are brown - That means the roo had green egg genes, not blue as it should be for an Ameraucana or Araucana.

Still wondering if anyone's tried crossing an Olive Egger back to a blue layer yet.

Remember my little F2 "golden olive egger" hen that I sent to my friend's place for awhile....she's got Blue Ameraucanas, they lay lt. green. I have also been thinking of sending my golden girl over to a good friend who has a Blue Wheaten Ameraucana...TRUE blue egg-laying lines. I'm going to check with her and see if she's interested in hosing a gal in her breed pen for awhile!

This thread is getting more interesting and exciting EVERY DAY!

I'm learning so much just by reading all of the posts.

I recently got some AMAZINGLY beautiful and sweet Maran chicks from Wynette...hoping to get a couple of ladies to start up my own Olive Egger flock. I also acquired a black Ameraucana rooster to work with, along with my blue wheaten Ameraucana rooster. So hopefully by this summer I'll be able to at least be in the first stages of this adventure.

Ms. Wy...hmmmm...a BWA rooster, huh?

As I said, I'm learning a lot from all you experts.

And I would be honored to be of assistance...I mean...my rooster would be honored.

My blue wheaten hen is laying very pretty blue eggs, so I know "Captain Jack" carries awesome genes as well. And if you need an extra 'bator for hatching the eggs, I'd love to help out with hatching as well.

We'll get it worked out.

Kuna-Clunker,
No one mentioned it yet but about your hens, the ones laying the olive eggs will have a pea comb and the one's laying the brown will have straight combs. I guess there's a tiny chance of having a straight comb and laying olive eggs but if you are getting the same number of eggs as you have hens with a pea comb, you have you answer as to who is laying what color...

Just bought 4 chicks from a neighbor who crossed a blue copper maran rooster to his blue ameraucana (look more like EE's to me). I got 2 blue colored chicks and 2 solid black chicks. I'm hoping I picked out at least a couple pullets but all 4 have pea combs

They are a couple weeks old and getting some wing feathers, beautiful, healthy, chunky chicks. The eggs they were out of were nice blue eggs and the rooster is from a guy near here that has some awesome marans! Super dark eggs. I am saving some of my Cuckoo Maran eggs that are fertile by my true Araucana roosters so I'm really excited to have some of them hatch too. I plan to set them very soon but the incubator is full right now.
