The Olive-Egger thread!

Not sure about the gene.

Once ours was a few months old and feathered out, there were
some people who questioned her photos until she actually layed an olive egg. She hardly lays any eggs (5 over
the past 3 months) and acts very protective over the flock. Not sure what I have, but a keeper
regardless. Am glad I hung onto her, because I almost got rid of her when some people first told me she
looked like she had sickle (I think that's what they are called) feathers.
It can be hard to tell gender wit EEs and OEs.

Good call holding on to her!

Do you have a rooster in your flock? If not that may explain the protective hen not laying. When no rooster is around to boss the hens around. A dominate hen will act as a rooster. As in being protective, watching the sky and keeping order in the flock. The first 2 years I raised chickens with out a roo. My oldest EE hen was the boss. After taking on the job. she went from laying almost everyday to maybe 2 times a week. And sometimes going weeks out of the nest box. Then I got a rooster. He was only 4 months old when I got him. She ruled him also. Then around 8 months old they started fighting. Knock down drag out fights would break out between them. When the rooster won too many fights she gave in. She is still in my flock 5 years later and the dominate hen, but the rooster rules them all. She still acts as protector when he isn't around. With 18 hens and 32 babies free ranging in the 5 acre yard, he can't be everywhere at once LOL

That is great info to have. You described her behaviors to a T.
She's always checking everything out, sounding alarm, walking
around the coop and is the last one in at night but gets her prime
sleeping spot. Will run up and
act as if she is going to attack someone (so far hasn't). She
chases other birds out of the yard when they get too close. She
is the only one to have protectively peck someone. (the others
will get a toe now and then especially when it has red toe nail
polish on it

I have put her in her place a couple of times. She is also the
most curious and climbs to the highest points. She endears
herself to me by climbing on my chair when I'm sitting outside.
She likes to try to get on the back of the chair and sit higher
up behind my head. At first I thought it was cute until she
started displaying the other behaviors. Now I don't let her.
I let her on the arm rest or in my lap on occasion.

No roosters are allowed in my HOA neighborhood, so for now,
she's our guard chicken and she plays the role well. I guess
it's a trade off for the lack of eggs. Thanks for the insight.
I won't be able to call her a "Dud" anymore. She is definitely
earning her keep when I look at it this way.

I have two green egg layers, and a rooster who I believe is also from a green egg, Incubating my first batch of chicks now, day 4 into incubation. I also have him crossed with barred rock and Colombian Rock hens. I am Really wanting to find some pure breeds that lay the blue egg, but have had no luck AT ALL. Really wish I could find some. I think the green egg goes very well with the brown, I love collecting such a diverse basket of eggs!

you will probably find breeders on the hatching egg thread in the forums here. typing it in will bring up sites with pictures
I'm always interested in your latest hatch =)
How does the egg size / color of the silver ameraucanas compare to any of your other blue eggers?
Did you get the UofA blues direct, or from ronott1?
