The Olive-Egger thread!

I had really good luck with this. I hatched some shipped olive layers, but I ended up with mostly cockerels, so I kept one. He does have a pea comb. As long as you are not bothered by the uncertainty of it all, he might be worth experimenting with. I'm glad I did, but I have a lot of space here.
I really appreciate all the answers here. Like anyone else who hatches or does straight runs, I have a ton of chicks just starting to show sex. I find I want to keep all my Roosters for different reasons. Maybe the hardest part of raising chickens is making a decision on what direction to take my currently mixed flock. :)

Here's my splash boy...He is pure. I wonder if maybe my white Easter Egger got her! Would that make more sense?

Was the EE roo in the same pen prior to or around the same time as when eggs were collected?

It would make more sense particularly if it is a barred rooster or has white covering barring genes so that you cannot see the barring. I don't believe it is possible the rooster pictured is the father simply because of the lack of blue in her/his feathering. In a way that is a good thing because he could still be a she if the rooster had barring (it certainly looks like one).

My pretty splash OE...blue marans/blue ameraucana

4 month old OE. Dad is an EE and mom is a splash Maran.
My fav chicken and am thinking its a roo, which I can't have where I live.
The tips of his/her feathers on the wings and chest have a bit of brown on them. The very tip. Not on the neck, though. Hasn't tried any crowing.

Hello Olive-Egger Peeps!

They say variety is the spice of life, and when it comes to our eggs, I believe it. We currently have 3 Easter-Eggers, 1 Red Sex-Link & 1 White Leghorn. Two of my three EE's are laying daily, and their eggs are just different enough in color (one is a pale blue/green, and the other is slightly darker, and more green) that I can tell who laid which egg...looking forward to our third EE joining the layers club. Our RSL lays medium brown eggs, and our WL lays the whitest eggs we've ever seen.

My husband and I are looking to get another 5 pullets/hens, and are currently in negotiations for some Blue Andalusian mixes (they lay white eggs, right?), but we would also like to have some Olive-Eggers (for those rich, olive-colored eggs), and Copper Marans (for those nearly chocolate-colored eggs). Variety!

I am still scouting through the Buy/Sell/Trade threads, but I haven't found anything yet...would anyone, on here, know of any Olive Eggers (or Copper Marans) for sale in the Central Texas area?

Thanks In Advance!

Try looking on your state threads....it looks like there's few of them.

WooHooo!!!! I am so d@mn excited!! My first Olive Egg!! ....and my first egg from my first flock that I hatched and raised. I have another flock that I bought as adults last fall.

Now, granted I am well aware that this is not a proper Olive Egger breeding with pure bred birds involved. I got some hatching eggs from a friend late this winter wanting some green egg layers. She has EE roos and several EE hens and various other hens but we think the only light feathered brown egg layers were amber links. The only green egg to hatch was a cockerel and the only brown egg to hatch was Henny and when I saw her pea comb I was hoping she'd lay an olive egg.

So we think Henny is a cross between an Easter Egger rooster and probably an Amber link hen, she's 19 weeks old.

Camera can't capture the true color (so frustraing!) and monitors skew it further. Pic of olive egg alone is the most accurate color, it's not as minty as it appears with the other eggs. It only weighed 33 grams in contrast with a 'large' 57 gram egg and an almost 'jumbo' 68 gramer.

Found it in the run when I let them out of the coop this afternoon, she must have laid it yesterday afternoon. No wonder the nest in the coop was all torn up yesterday. Hope she figures out to lay in the nest soon.

Anyway thought you Olive Egger breeders might be interested to see the deets.

Her comb isn't a brilliant red, but it has swelled and increased in hue in the last week or so. It looks maybe like a cross between a pea and the small single an amber link would have.

CONGRATS!

Olive egg is an olive egg, use whatever parentage you like. Personally I like they idea of using breeds known for high egg production because having productive birds is very important to me. I have noticed that my parent's Red Star (similar to Amber Link) despite laying eggs every single day lays a medium to dark brown egg, often times darker than many marans depending on lineage. My red star unfortunately didn't lay as deep of a brown egg shell color but her daughter is what I would call an Olive Egger, and she only misses laying an egg about once a month so far. I bet you will have a nice productive bird there, and if you get another pea combed rooster from the same cross I would breed them together and select for even darker shell color.
