The Olive-Egger thread!

Does any one have a broody hen that ONLY goes broody when another hen is, and she won't sit on her own? My Splash OE (pictured above), I named her Moaning Myrtle, will only sit on other hen's nests. She has done it to Poof (Silkie) and Labelle (GL Polish). When Poof was sitting, I had to take Moaning Myrtle out of the coop, and she her broody broke. Now it's about five or six weeks later, and now she's trying to take Labelle's clutch. My eggs are fine, and she hasn't added any more eggs to the clutch like she was doing. I don't really want to break her broody. I would rather her take some eggs and hatch them, but she won't stay on her own nest. She pushes Labelle out, and Labelle stays broody, so she just randomly finds another egg to sit on.

I considered putting Labelle on a different nest and splitting the eggs between them, but wouldn't Myrtle treat them as if they were just laid and not go on lock down at the right time? They have been incubating for 14 days (two have been for 18 days), and Myrtle's just tried going broody since last week. UGH! What would y'all do?

Even through the act is annoying, Myrtle is so cute!

I can't remember who asked me to post some pics of my Olive Egger chicks, but here they are at 1 month old. They are Blue Wheaten Ameraucana over Welsummer. Somebody mentioned that cross might have sex linked coloration of the skin on the legs and feet with males staying yellow and females having green. This seems to be true of my (incredibly small sample size) chicks. Although they all hatched with yellow legs, but Day 5 some had greenish legs. Of the 3 chicks I had, I lost one a few days ago to Coccidiosis :/ It appeared to be a pullet and had green legs. The two that remain are below.

Pullet, I think. She seems to have gotten dad's "blue" gene. Her legs/feet are greenish.

The one below is a cockerel, I believe. Yellow legs/feet, and his comb is starting to develop and turn a little pink. Struts like a boy already. Has some black feathers, especially around the neck and chest, like a Welsummer cockerel. His feathers are a hot mess right now! Can't wait to see what he ends up looking like.

I'll try to remember to post some more pics in a few months when they get their adult plumage.

That would be me - thanks a million! My friend will be using the black am from me over her wellies next year - can't wait to see them. I'm keeping both a blue and a splash am roo and have some wellie pullets to play with in the spring, too!

Right now he looks like a bald Eagle... :) cute!

Ah, hotlipshens. How could I forget. (MASH was a favorite of mine back in the day!) And I'm not sure if he's got dad's coloration or not. He has some genuine black on him, but his tail feathers look blue. Time will tell.

Wheaten and Blue Wheaten Ameraucanas go through a stage where they look a bit like Bald Eagles. He must have gotten that from dad, too.
