Sorry I've been so bad about not getting these pics! Had a major medical emergency with one of our dogs last week, and all I've been thinking about is getting her back to good health.

SG - what a beautiful pic of a hen & her babies!

Jeremy, I think those babies will be GORGEOUS!

it's ok

I have 3 blue (possibly barred) chicks from cuckoo marans x splash ee. I have 2 chipmunk chicks from welsummer x splash ee (I have NO idea how I got chicks like this... the chicken calculator says they should be blue). Lastly, 2 whitish/lt. buff chicks that I'm guessing are from my splash blrw x splash ee (other choices are golden comet or australorpe). Here's some pics! I really really hope they start laying this year and don't wait till next spring!

everyone I need help. I am having a hard time deciding which Roo to keep. ( I'm new to this )

My Pullets are
1BCM
1Wheaten Maran
1White Olive Egger
1White Silkie
1Wheaten Araucana
1 Barred Rock
2 speckled Sussex
and soon to have 1 SLW, 1 GLW and 1 BLRW

The Roo's I have are
1 Black Olive Egger
1 Wheaten Maran
1 Cuckoo Maran
1 Lav Silkie Cross

I was going to keep the Black Olive Egger Roo because hes the largest and my Fav. but now after reading all these posts I don't know what to keep. Do I need a Maran Roo to get the dark brown eggs out of my Marans hens? Should I be keeping my Cuckoo or Wheaten Marans? The Lav Silkie cross is soo cool looking!! Can I keep two if I only have 10
hens? PLEASE HELP!!

You'll still get dark eggs out of your maran hens - it's their babies that would lay a different egg (prob. very dark olive if you bred them to your olive egger roo). I would not keep 2 roos with 10 hens... they'll get worn out quick. Unless of course you're able to split them into two pens.

Does your olive egger have a pea comb? If so, then keep him since he's your favorite. Then you can cross him with your Marans hen and even your Araucana and see what you get. The hen contributes to the dark egg color too, not just the rooster. People here have done crosses both ways.

I have 2 roos in with 13 girls and they get along just fine. I also have bachelor pads (old rabbit hutches made chicken friendly / safe) set up for "extra" roos. Good luck... I know how hard these decisions can be.
