The Olive-Egger thread!

this is correct. infact you can keep breeding your 3/4 birds back to marans to kill two birds with one stone(no Pun intended): first to make darker olive eggers and second to make them look more like marans in type and color. now after some time doing this back crossing you will have Pea combed marans that lay super dark olive eggs
yes there is a lady out where I live that has some. Really neat looking. hers look like pea combed blue copper Marans that are mostly laying dark dark olive eggs

Hello, all! I am in the midst of reading this thread front to back, but am excited to share I have Olive Eggers on the way! Yeah! I found a great Oregon source in the form of Brian Parks at Fraiser Creek Farm. http://www.frasiercreekfarm.com/breeds/Olive-Egger I like his approach of raising meat and egg varieties because he loves to cook with good food. I fell in love with the colors of the eggs from his girls! Anyway, I thought you all might like to see his eggs and the mixed of birds he used to create his olive eggers. I can't wait for my OEs to arrive with some Marans too!

I've got a question for those of you who are 'in the know', if I cover my EEs with a BCMarans Roo, will they produce Olive Eggers? Or do I need to cover my Marans girls with a Roo who carries a blue layer gene? I apologize if this has already been covered.

yes. EE hens mated to BCMaran roos will give you Olive eggers, all of the chicks will be black at hatch with cream underbelly, be in the look out for pea comb pullets, they are the ones that will lay olive eggs

I will be hatching EEs eggs covered by BCM roo late this summer. I want to then breed those chicks back to the BCMs roo(for darker olive coloring) ..but they are his daughters...is this..well...bad chicken breeding??

thats a sound breeding plan. a back cross to parent is not bad at all if you have healthy birds, now after you've done the cross keep an eye for pea combed pullets and pea combed roosters. you can cross the back cross rooster back to maran hens. or cross the darker olive eggers back to a different black copper maran rooster
