Hi All.

I'm just starting to work with Oliver Eggers and was curious as to which gives the best egg color in F1 generation - dark egg roo (Marans) over blue egg hens (Ameraucana or Legbar) or a blue egg roo over dark egg hens? Right now I have two roosters (one FBCMarans and one Lav Ameraucana) ranging with a flock of FBCMarans and Ameraucana hens (lav and lav carrier blacks). Since I didn't have the answer to the question in time for the first hatch, it will be interesting to see what colors the now 8 week old gals show in their eggs.

I'm glad you asked that!Thats what I was wondering as well.I am interested in trying to breed my own olive eggers and would love to know which combo provides the better color.

Thanks for the answer.

Now my next question is,where can I find the best quality dark egg stock? Some say that the hatchery Marans are not reliable for the best color so I'm interested in finding a reputable breeder that is close to the North Florida area that I can keep on file until I am ready to start this little project.I have no hatching equipment as of yet so I will have to have the chicks shipped as opposed to hatching eggs. Thanks for any info!!

the Dark brown egg shell trait is a Polygenic trait. meaining many genes are at play, this is true more so for the Darkest of egg layers, now some of these genes may infact be sex linked. meaming the Sire will pass these sex linked genes to her daughters, meaning a BCM roo over EE/Ameraucana will probably give you the best outcome

Sorry to be a pain but can someone please PM me Bevs email addy? I cannot pull it up on my computer for some reason.
