The Olive-Egger thread!

My OE is now 14 weeks and Im still stumped on gender!?!?!? he walks very upright but is a big baby and is at the bottom of even the pullet pecking order. No crowing or Roo behavior. No wattles but that is due to the Ameraucana blood. S/he only has one copy of the barring gene because only dad was barred so coloring is not an indication of gender. What do you think?

Here is a close up of the comb, it isnt very wide. Yes its red, but so are my other pullets around the same age.

I am pulling for a pullet for you. The combs on your other girls are dark. My 9 week old Ameraucans are trying to crow. You won't be certain until it crows or lays an egg.

I'd hang into this bird until you know for sure!

A comb that red at only 14 weeks, thickness of the bird's legs, overall posture/stance is indicative of a roo as well as probably the most compelling evidence- you can clearly see pointed sickle feathers developing in the bird's tail. Clearly a young rooster.

I would save yourself the heartache of keeping him any longer and having to rehome him when he crows, the longer you hang on to him the more attached you're likely to become, that's always been my experience. That is unless you plan on keeping him to breed.

Sound, but sad advice. Maybe you can give him to a friend so you can go visit.

I have a bunch of lovely little pullets from an Olive Egger breeder that are straight combed. These are 5th generation OEs. What do you all call the birds that will not lay olive eggs, but are from OE project stock? Mutts? OEs?

I would call them OEs. They could be called EEs too though.

You can't really call them Olive Eggers because they don't lay olive eggs. What color do they lay? Brown eggs, I'm assuming dark brown? You could just sell them as "chocolate eggers" but specify that they aren't pure Marans/Welsummers/whatever was used to create them/etc.
