The Olive-Egger thread!

On the egg genetics I was reading some place that there are genes that effect getting "shiny" or "mate" eggs: Mediterian Type birds usually carry the "mate" gene which is dom., and Asian breeds usually carry the "shiny" which is rec. So I was currios as that info is never on pages about breeds what sort of eggs do you guys think your various birds are producing?

penedesenca eggs are generally not that shinny. more of a reddish brown however sometimes the lighter eggs do appear shinny so it varies from bird to bird for me.

Mrs Jocelyn who has both genes on her flock of Rapa-Nui(easter island) and native south americans (blue Mate and Blue shiny) has reported that the gene is recessive

Okay so if you want shinny you need a hen that is laying shiny any colour then I would guess the F1 crossing F1 and backbreading to her I would think. I think the green layer I had years ago had dull eggs and so did my brown layers now that I think about it. So they would have been Dom. Mate carriers.

So if you have a hen that is laying shiny eggs, then to test a roo's DNA for shiny you would breed that roo to her wait to see what his daughters lay, if he is rr "shiny" all pullets should lay shiny eggs but if he is DD "mate" all pullets would lay "mate" eggs & if he is Dr "mate" + "shiny" most pullets should lay "mate" but a few should also lay "shiny".

I believe its Autosomal not sexlinked, so if you know your hen is laying shiny ones and you want to test a roo, that would be the best way to do it

Your boy looks a lot like my Welsummer/EE roo, Peepers.

OMG! Your Peepers looks like my Bandit! Well... Bandit is beardless.
