The Olive-Egger thread!

Quote: I am amazed by how blue they are! She's an EE from Townline, of course they and the local mill I bought them from insist on calling them Araucanas even tho they know better<rolleyes>.
I call them AraKindas.
Am very curious to see if the blue remains as vibrant after a month or so. Here's a pic of her from 6 weeks ago, them most recent I have, don't have a whole body shot but her legs are decidedly green and her pea comb is much larger and redder now of course.

In my experience, all of my blue and green eggs just like brown eggs fade as egg laying increases. My nice olive egg is now more like an EE's egg. Does your EE that lays that nice blue egg lay daily?

Quote: Nope, she's laid 5(correction from 4 cited above) eggs over 6 days. The first was on the floor shell less and crushed, the second was thin shelled and pecked on roost board, both found early in the morning. The 3rd was perfect and tiny and I didn't note where I found it. The 4th was shell less, on the board about to be eaten. The 5th was perfect but on the floor after a long time in the nests. She definitely is having problems getting in the groove, but I have also just integrated the 2 flocks a couple day ago(day of her last egg), so I'm sure that may also be part of the problem.

We shall see what comes today!

Well, here's maybe #'s 6&7, she did not lay yesterday, left these 2 in the nest this morning, I saw her in there twice. I've been watching pretty closely today, sitting in coop and waiting for plumber, so I am almost positive(see that disclaimer there) that they both came from one pullet.......the only other EE I have, I do not believe is laying yet (tho one of these could be her first).

This pic shows several of her eggs for color comparison, today's 2 are on the right.
Color looks different as this was not taken in bright sunlight like the in previous post(far left left here).

Olive Oil
The color is similar, although mine might be a tad paler. I am vastly disappointed. May as well have just bought more EEs. This is NOT olive. It is pale green. They should be called what they are.
I was disappointed as well. I would call mine "olive." I should not have used the flash when I took that pic. It is a very light shade of olive though. I agree as some of the others have said that some of the breeders are confused as to what makes an "olive" egger. Many seem to think that any shade of green is acceptable. I think some people also get mixed up as to which of their chickens they are crossing if they don't separate carefully. This is why I am waiting to see what shade all of my girls lay before selling any. I don't want to hear that I sold someone a brown egg laying hen that was supposed to be an OE!

You did say that you were not positive that the pale pale green egg was from your OE though, right? Maybe it's not! You might try isolating her to find out for sure.

Gonna brag a bit here as I am so pumped for my first hatched/raised here birds to be giving me eggs...I wanted BCM and Ameraucanas....can't afford it - the stock and/or the facilities, but I got some nice color anyway!

My Welsummer started out very light :( but darkened up after 3-4 eggs....spray booth tuned up I guess - 12 eggs out of her so far.

My maybe olive egger that I hatched out of a fairly dark brown egg from a friend (we think maybe an amberlink covered by one of 2 EE roos) has been between a nice pretty nice olive but sometimes green - 28 eggs from her so far.

One of the hatchery EE's has given a pretty nice shade of blue - only 4 eggs from her so far, so we'll see how it progresses.

I have one more EE to start laying and a couple light brahmas...but I am really excited to have these girls and a Welsummer rooster to hatch eggs from next late winter/early spring..

Here's my Pullet Palette:
Very pretty.

Good thought. Thanks.

Gorgeous eggs! Are these yours? Do you know what type of chicken laid the darkest eggs up top? My Birchen Marans have dark eggs, but they're more like the 2nd row up from the bottom. I only have 2 layers right now though. Can't wait to see what their pullets produce. Only a month or 2 left to find out!
My Olive-Eggers that I bred (1st gen) have yet to start laying, but from what I have read, the green eggs in this pic would be more like 2nd or 3rd gen Olive Eggers. I have heard of some people getting really interesting colors on their 1st try though. I hope to be one of those people!
