The Olive-Egger thread!

No, I don't know what laid any of those eggs. I just found the picture on the internet. I don't have the room to try and make my own crosses. Genetics are tricky!

There should be a "wanna-be olive egg" thread. There are a lot of us out there!

I have one OE pullet. She should be laying by now, but seems to be taking her sweet time. She hatched in February.

It is good to have a dream!

Thought I'd share pics of my Olive Egger project birds I'm keeping for breeding next year. What a motley crew! New OE layer, bottom left compared to 2 EE (left), 1 Ameraucana (center), and 1 OE (right) with brown egg for comparison.

Ethan, one of the Olive Egger roosters I'm keeping for next year.

Some of the pullets and hens.

I got some nice BBS Ameraucanas to use for next year.

I'm not as interested in pure F1 Marans/Ameraucana olive eggs as I am the more elusive shades of green from breeding F1s, F2s, etc. Lots of unpredictability. Lots of fun!

My almost dark brown, almost blue and almost olive eggs. ;-)
ETA......Welsummer...............EE......................AOE.

I was banding my flock today and took lots of pictures! Thought I would share some. I've yet to see eggs from any of these girls, but hope to soon!

I just found out that Pumpkin (my young "Ameracauna" roo is alas an Easter Egger as someone
had recently suggested. Green on the legs really coming in.

So I'm thinking I should not cross him to try and get more OE's since I really don't know what egg color gene he will add to my mix. I already have a gorgeous Birchen Marans roo, but thought I would keep my Ameracauna roo as well so I had more options as far as crossing. Thoughts?

The mix relaxing. Exhausted from an hour of banding!

Olive Oil! My first Olive-Egger pullet

Stay Puff. OE pullet with the Ameracauna "cheeks"

OE pullet (guess!) so far un-named

Olive Oil (right) and black OE pullet with the cheeks (left)

OE Roo. I think he will be a beauty when he grows up!

Hmmm...first egg today from what I was told was a crested cream legbar (it was an extra in some Rhodebar shipped eggs). She looks like a CCL and the egg she came from was the most gorgeous true blue I've seen. Her egg however is green and I couldn't tell it from the Isbar eggs if I didn't know better. She is in a completely different pen from the Isbars and in with nothing but Marans so I know the green egg is hers.

So...her mama must have been in with a brown egg type cock/erel. My plan was to put her in with the Marans cock for sexlinked olive eggers, but now I'm wondering if that will work for me. Am I likely to get only 50% olive layers out of this cross?
