The Olive-Egger thread!

Question on crosses, if someone could help.if I crossed a CL rooster with a blue copper Marans hen: what colored offspring would I get?
I'm assuming they'd be sex linked since it's a barred over a solid. Is that correct?
And my OE Marans /am just started laying!! Pics to come shortly

Check on the sexlink thread to make sure about which has to be the hen and rooster. If the correct parents are used, you will have black sexlinks.

I didn't know there was a sex link thread. I should have thought about that since there's everything g here :) thanks Ron

BARRED hen with SOLID cock = sexlink. CCL cock over Marans hen = single barred offspring, not sexlinked.

My BCM cock over CCL hen = sexlinked black pullet chicks and barred cockerels (spot on head at hatch).

I just posted there. Ron, are you saying even with a blue copper Marans , I'll get black offspring? I'm just wanting to get some blue oe's with some stock I have. That's the first priority.
If they could be sex linked too, that would be great!!

You might get other colors. The white spot on the head is what makes them sex linked.

I should have added that the blue genetics works for making sexlinks because it is close enough to black genetics(Andalusian?)

Hello everyone! I am just now reading through some of the posts so I may answer my own question but here it goes.

I am getting a quad of marans next weekend (1 black copper roo and 3 splash hens) and I am waiting for some cream legbar eggs to hatch right now (so obviously I am thinking way into the future lol)

would crossing maran roo X leg bar hen produce the same results as leg bar roo X maran hen?

If so could I technically put them in the same pen and when I incubate and hatch eggs I would have a mix of pure marans (which would be blue cause of the bcm and splash cross), pure legbars and then olive eggers? The only problem I can see with this is that since barring is dominate (?) the legbar roo X maran hen crosses will be hard to identify from the pure legbar males...Im just guessing here though. Im really just learning about genetics as I go.

Thanks for your help!

The marans rooster over the legbar hens would result in sex linked chicks (the males would have a white spot on their heads). This is not true if you do a legbar rooster over Marans hens.

I have some BCM eggs in the incubator that were fertilized by my Legbar/ameraucana rooster. If/When they hatch, I will post pictures.

I'm going to follow this thread in the hopes that next spring I'll get some OE chicks from our new White Ameraucana pullets and Blue Copper Marans rooster. Carry on... :)

yeah I knew those wouldn't be sex links but since leg bars are sexlinks then it would hard to tell the male pure leg bars apart from the leg bar X maran crosses (since barring is dominant)

would love to see pics when they hatch!
