The Olive-Egger thread!

So... all that aside -- I have three blue laying 'non-APA approved' maybe "ameraucanas" who lay darling little blue eggs.... and maybe my RIR casanova will turn out some green egg layers.... Guess I'll see..
RIRs, and a blue egg layer, regardless of where they come from will make green egg layers. If the blue egg layer only has one dominant blue egg shell gene(more common in hatchery EES) then some will be brown.

The green will not usually be dark enough to make an olive color. RIRs are not listed as being a Dark brown egg laying breed.

They may call them that, but they would not be able to be shown at an APA poultry show.

4-H is different and they really do not care much about the standard for shows.

Meyers Hatchery sell both Easter Eggers and Ameraucanas. They ante listed separate in thief catalog. They have descriptions of both in there.

'Nuff said.

please do not mis understand me--I think the whole thing is frustrating. I have gotten into arguments with folks on the Ameraucana threads over this.

Seriously though, they call anything that lays a blue egg that does not meet a narrow definition EEs. Be careful over their. I am only giving out information--they will go after you!

Meyres hatchery has a thief catalog? That might explain a lot!

I know, it was supposed to be their, I just could not resist.

Well who knows they may switch to EE for anything that is in America, lay people can be so confused they think they have araucanas, when they actually have EE's and a feed store might claim they are selling araucanas and actually sell EE's

I have seen that on the araucana thread. Stuff happens like that all the time.

You can find purebred Ameraucanas that are considered EEs because they are a non-standard color. You can also find EEs that are homozygous for blue egg genes are lay eggs that are just as pretty as show-quality Ameraucanas. Everyone has their own goals for their chickens. Mine is awesome egg colors and pretty birds. Personally I think showing birds is silly and I doubt the birds enjoy it at all.

EEs are any blue/green egg layer cross and ameraucana is a breed, right? I have 3 non standard colour and clear faced araucanas, there is no way that they can be called EEs. their line has been araucanas for hundreds of years. my females look like their ancestor collonca - nothing to do with EE.

BTW I am going to cross them with BCM for OEs.

I just call them all AmeriKindas. or ArauKindas....cause they're 'kinda' like that.

Got a nice one in spring of 2014 that lays a pretty strong blue egg and under a Welsummer cock made some pullets that lay pretty nice olive eggs.
