The Olive-Egger thread!

The two from October hatch that started the last week and half with a almost
white egg have now turned a pale blue pastel in color so maybe Stew does have
the blue jean in him

It very well could depending on the color the EE lays. I had some hens hatch their own eggs (wasn't paying close attention.) and at most I would have expected green eggs and I got some beautiful olive eggs from them, comparable to the color of the olive eggers I hatched on purpose. Just the way the genes landed, I guess.

Hi Everyone!

Last year, we had a Black Copper Marans roo. We hatched out the cream legbar hen eggs and a couple (green) EE eggs hoping for olive Eggers. We ended up only keeping three offspring- the two pictured and another that hadit's mother's crested head (CCL), with BCM coloring. I had first assumed she would be Auto sexing like her mother... I also assumed she'd be an automatic OE. Wrong on both accounts. HOWEVER- yesterday I hatched one egg of hers and it has chipmunk stripes! So...my first question is, is Auto Sexing something that skips the first generation?Would this one likely be an OE?

Now to my second question... The roo above is the sibling of the olive egg layer above. The shells are definitely blue inside. I would assume they are the CCL offspring, because of the blue shell. The EE lays a mint green egg but has the blue feathering undertones... Is it possible Black Copper Marans over a CCL could have this blue copper marans look? I'm hoping their offspring will be OE...but the missing auto sexing, or sex link attribute from the legbar (if it is her) has me stumped. Sorry if it's all superconfusing!!! Thank you in advance for your help!!!

The chicks from the CCL hen would most definitely be autosexing bc CCL are genetically barred. Auto sexing isn't always easy though because some colorings will be muddier and harder to tell. I have a Blue Copper Marans Roo over a CCL hen and out of several eggs hatched always got Black with gold leakage or Blue in pullets and have kept one cockerel that ended up looking more CL colored but a little darker golden patterned.

I imagine you may just have to wait for this striped chick to feather out more to have a better guess to go on. And a chick hatched from a Marans over a Legbar should definitely produce an Olive Egger. That Roo looks sort of like a Blue Copper to me with greyish tail feathers. Was the EE blue looking by chance? So this striped chick could have genes from BCM, EE, and CCL? Basically I'm wondering if your hen was actually BCM x EE.....and bred with the Roo(which was BCM x CCL)? That would explain the stripes and why the hen isn't an olive egger?

Hmm but I would think EE x BCM would still make an automatic olive egger. What color were the eggs these hatched out of?

Is it also possible that your Black Copper Marans Roo was a really dark blue? I have had a few really dark blues that would almost be called black. Heck I had one Roo that had blackish hackles and his body was so dark that unless you were right next to him you would think he was black.....and I actually did....for a little while, LOL

Thanks for your response! Well... Now that I'm thinking so hard about it, the hen that lay the olive eggs inthe pic has a rosecomb...like theEE (who, yes, has blue under feathering). When you say your marans over CCL chicks all hatched black with gold, how is that auto sexing? It's exactly what happened here, so I'm just curious- I figured all CCL off spring would come out striped somehow- instead, the grandchild did

Here is a picture of the new chick- "she" is the darker striped one, next to a CCL chick. As far as apossible blue marans, no...not unless Greenfire Farms totally screwed up

Then there is this little possible splash, or possible lavender(???), from the parents pictured above...?

I am so happy that it worked out nicely, because you never know when trying to make olive eggers if you are going to get a nice colored egg or a brown one!

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the name!!!! We've had an Omlet, Yolk, Grits, Bacon, still have a Quiche, but never a Scrambles. Definitely the name of the next chick we keep! And the name of our farm? Over Easy Farm!!!!!!!
