The Olive-Egger thread!

Can someone help me? I got 1 Black Copper Maran and 1 Olive Egger, they look exactly alike except one has a black comb and the other has a tan comb. Both have feathered legs. Can someone give me some insight on how to tell them apart?

Look up gypsy or mulberry skin on BYC for more info. Could it be a black silkie? Whatever it is, it should be stunning!

A little over a week old- I don't have a name yet for this little one

The one closes to the lavender is the marans. They'll keep more white as chicks but will feather out solid black (may or may not get the copper). You'll be able to them apart as they grow too. Also- many of ours started with black combs- if that helps. Good luck!!!

Hi everyone, I wanted to see if I was the only one that had this happen too. Just today I noticed my house chicken Caramellow was struggling to lay an egg, it took her about 5 minutes to lay the egg itself and afterwards she passed out flat on the floor of her box. I thought I had lost her. She has been through alot, we bought her months ago from someone who was selling out of her older hens and this girl spoke to me with her little backwards toe and beautiful gold on black plumage. Yes she was plucked by a previous rooster but when we got her and two others one of those two plucked her worse to the point she is now missing her neck feathers and back feathers, they are growing back in but slower than they were before.
She is a loving talkative hen that watches me while I am on the computer in my living room. I do not trust the flock to put her back in after she has been in the house this long, and I want her feathers to come back in fully. She lays large dark olive green eggs, but todays was double the size and had a double yolk.

She still could use contact with other birds is she getting a layer feed at least 18% or
higher might also give her shell ground and yogurt

Would I get an Olive Egger if I crossed my Cuckoo Maran rooster with Easter Eggers that lay light green eggs? If there are chances of brown egg layers, what are the odds of having olive egger vs brown egg layer?

Probably about 50/50....or maybe less.

Go for it. I did the same crossing, opposite sexes (Mothers were several breeds of dark egg layers and some even laid paler eggs so I really expected some minty green layers) and I got ALL olive eggers.
