The Olive-Egger thread!

Jeremy, I have a very good friend who has many, many years of breeding experience & an excellent working knowledge of genetics who has really been pushing me to do that project! I just have so many other things going on, I'm not sure I have the energy to take on one more!

Cydney - I'm with you on the blues!

Wow, I had to go back 5 pages to find this thread!

My olive eggers are now 19 weeks old! And overnight, their combs are turning bright red.

So close I can't stand it!

I'm still about 2 months behind. . . Come'on, time!!

But at least I am VERY happy to find out I have 3 Olive Egger pullets instead of 2. . . Lately I haven't been the greatest at sexing my pea combed birds apparently because my females as of late have been developing some mighty big and red combs. Which honestly is weird, considering they're usually late bloomers and one of them is purebred Ameraucana, having a very small comb even at laying age.

Mine are created from pure Ameraucana's as well and I had 2 that I thought for sure were boys because their combs turned pink early on. But by 10 weeks, the combs were the same size, so I found out I had girls.

Since I used welsummer in my OEs the chicks are sexable- some at hatch and some later- they feather in just like welsummers. If you see red & black they are boys. I have 3 or 4 laying now

I FINALLY remembered to get a pic of my 2011 olive egger's eggies!

I have 3 girls, one started laying about a month ago, and laid on & off but has now quit. The 2nd began laying just this week, and this is her eggie (it's a double yolker...not typical of them, but they often lay them when they're first beginning to lay). Her momma's eggs were colored like the EE also shown. The tan egg above is a medium-sized Tomaru Longcrower egg for color comparison. I'm super pleased with the color - my girls are in with the Marans and, bred back to him, their offspring should lay a very dark olive. I'm so excited to hatch some!
