I popped 10 of my cuckoo Maran eggs in the incubator yesterday. They've been with 4 Arauacana roosters while I wait for spring to get here to set up breeding pens for the Araucana's. I collected them the past few days while the weather didn't dip below 40 so I hope they're okay. Right now, any egg laid for the next week or so is an eater......unless they freeze and burst! I did have a few do that a couple weeks ago and it's supposed to be -6 the next couple of days
We have over a foot of snow and it's just getting started. They're calling it the first real blizzard we've ever had in SW Missouri. I'm not impressed yet but it's not done. I remember a few winters in the past 50 yrs that were pretty much the same as we have now so I'm kind of curious how much worse it might get.
Anyway, these chicks should be sex linked since the hens are all cuckoo/barred and the roosters are not. From this cross late last summer, every chick was rumpless and some had tufts! I still had a few Ameraucana hens so some were that cross too. I only kept one and she's not laying yet. She's got Huge, equal tufts and is totally rumpless and shiny black. I give the roosters away from this cross if anyone is interested. I say they should be sexlinked but I'm not certain since the rooster colors are birchen, splash, blue etc. so there could be some cool colors in this hatch. Previously, there was just one rooster in with these girls. Should be good fertility since they got bred a lot, lol
I'll post when I actually have chicks (it may have still been too cold for them to be viable) and if I can sex them young, I'll give the roosters away to anyone that wants to pay shipping.
