The Olive-Egger thread!

Wynette,

I got the eggs from MedicineMan. He is an f1 olive egger (has a pea comb). I did want to put him over some dark egg layers and some blue/green egg layers to see what I get from each. So a couple Wheaten Marans and a couple Buff Amaraucana's are on my wanted list then?!

That is what I would try if he were mine, CCC! There are some super dark laying Wheaten Marans lines - the darker the egg, the better for this cross. PM me with where you are located, and I can try to hook you up if you like.

Anyone have olive layers in the Central Tx area? I'd like to add one (or two) to my little flock. Right now all my birds are under 6 wks, so - correct me if I am wrong - but I was hoping to a add similar aged bird.

Thanks -
Victoria

I love hearing about what everyone is breeding together to make their olive eggers. Last year I bred my Lavender Ameraucana rooster with my Black Copper Marans. I have one pullet from the mix. Her eggs are more green than olive. I have her in with a Lavender Split Ameraucana and a Black Copper Marans roosters. So far, I have hatched out three lavenders. My guess is that the chicks with lay more of a blue egg because they have more Ameraucana blood. My plan is to keep the Lavender pullets and breed them back to the Black Copper Marans. I really want a Lavender Olive egger flock.

Yes, clever! I have two Light Brahma pullet chicks on the way that I plan to breed to my blue Ameraucana roo. I could call them Brahmacaunas!

Thanks for sharing...never thought of coining a crossbreed name for them!

well, in this scenario it makes a big difference whether it's the mother or the father is the cuckoo (barred). In your case, you have a Blue Copper Olive Egger rooster, right?

Like this?

So breeding him with Cuckoo Marans would result in sex-linked peeps. The mothers only have one copy of the barring gene and they can pass it on to only their sons, so all the male peeps will be Cuckoo, half black, half blue - they'll have a white spot on the tops of their heads as peeps. All the girl peeps would be Black or Blue.

I think I have that correct. Maybe not.

Thanks, again, for the info! That sounds too perfectly easy! Hanging on to them until they're 4-6 months to be sure if they're male/female is difficult with my limited accommodations. I have already got two other 6mo OE roos that need to go right now.

Sounds like Medicine Man really knows his stuff, but he doesn't sound totally positive ~ so anyone else want to chime in on this...before I start begging hubby for Cuckoo Marans!

Also, thanks, jarodw45! That avatar is my Cree line splash roo, Crusty. He got named that because he hatched out totally covered in yolk and quickly got all "crusty". He looked awful, but now he's a beauty!

Those Cree birds, when fully bearded/muffed, have some amazing beard/muffs!

As to answer the question - You'd still get 50/50 blue or black, however it sounds like your females are the cuckoo Marans, so the offspring will be sex-linked. Males will be blue or black cuckoo, possibly with gold hackles but not much, while females will be solid blue or black.
