The Olive-Egger thread!

This is my little Olive Egger Cockeral - any ideas on what he'll look like when grown?

I can't wait to start on my Olive egger project. I got a nice OE blue barred roo that we hatched out just for fun. I love the color so I now have plans for more. Right now I have my blue Am in with my cuckoo marans, I also have some blue marans that I have growing out that I want to get into the mix. Is anyone else working on something along these lines?

This picture is from awhile ago, he has filled out some more now.
The little bugger started crowing at about 7-8 weeks

I had a surprise OE in my nest boxes today. I have NO IDEA of who laid it but it must be one that I hatched last year and just started laying. Now I'm on a mission to figure it out.

Pretty pics, folks! Boy, olive eggers sure are different, aren't they? I just LOVE the variety you get with them!

Around here, I can't sell extra mutt cockerels for more than $5 each.

I usually give my roos away as long as somebody pays for at least one pullet. It's been difficult explaining to the old timers and the former migrant workers around here what olive eggers are- they're just not into it. And they are my biggest customers- oh well!

And golly over here I keep every single one of my OE cockerels!

. . . Woman's gotta eat, you know, and mine are bred specifically for good meat in mind, too. (thus, I have a very meaty Araucana as the blue egg laying parent) My OE boys are getting huge.

Love the blue barred one. . . Mrs Fluffy Puffy, I'd need better photos to tell you what he'll look like. All I can see is patterning resembling some BBR and possibly splash or columbian in there.

I wish I had a processor close to me - if I did, I'd for sure at my extra cockerels. Can't do the deed myself, too big of a weenie.

Closest processor is 45 minutes from here, so I'd have to have a truckfull in order to make it worthwhile.

I have a question about genetics ~ my OEs were hatched from cuckoo marans eggs covered by a Ameraucana roo. I have 2 black and 1 blue OE hens covered by a splash Ameraucana roo. I was wondering if the BBS genetics will hold true in this case. Blue x Splash = 50% Blue & 50% Splash & Black x Splash = 100% Blue.

Also as the males in the original Cuckoo Marans/Ameraucana were "sex linked" having the white spot on their heads and feathered in with barring, would this pass onto this next generation?

Thanks!

I now have 2 of my olive eggers laying pretty olive eggs. The color is pretty nice too. I'll have to post some pics when my internet is fixed. (the downside of living in a rural area) I plan to cross my blue female back to hopefully darken the eggs more.
