(Yes, set in mondern times, not the 1800's. Sure you may encounter animals in the forest but not sure it's the right place for barn animals?)

Ella looked up at James with curious eyes, "I don't know...." She coughed, "I'm kinda tired. After all the sun is going down." She gestured towards the sunset.

I didn't say that she has cows and pigs. She has one cow and some goats and sheep, and she has some areas of the meadow fenced off. She keeps them there.

Her family brought them to her while they were building her house.

I guess I didn't really explain her past. My bad.
When she was younger, a person in her village discovered that she was a shape changer, and the town was either going to kill her or imprison her, so her family snuck her out of the village and took her into the forest. They built a house for her and also gave her a few animals so that she could be self-sufficient and wouldn't have to risk going into a town to get supplies.
