Our state department of Fish and Wildlife here in Washington has a great page on coyote control: http://wdfw.wa.gov/wlm/living/coyotes.htm

So
I read through it and discovered the fence topper called THE COYOTE ROLLER:

"Essentially, the Coyote Roller works by preventing them from being able to get the
foothold necessary to hoist themselves over a tall fence. (Note, coyotes can clear 5 foot tall
fences without having to touch the fence at all.) The idea is so simple you almost have to wonder
why you didn't think of it yourself. The Coyote Roller is made of aluminum materials and is
constructed so finely that it only takes two ounces of pressure to cause it to spin. This means that
even medium to large birds can't stand on the device without causing it to spin."

Hmmmm...so it keeps YOUR dogs and cats IN, and keeps ALL coyotes, dogs, raccoons, possums, foxes, cats, etc. OUT -- at least from entry over the top of the fence. If owls or hawks land on it, they can't keep their footing. Wow! Sign me up!

Then I saw the price: five bucks a linear foot. Yow!

Anyone out there ever use this or hear about how effective it is in the REAL world around a chicken run?

And for you MacGyver types, could something like this be built in the home shop to save money?

I think it would work but if they couldn't get over they would put their sneaky little brains to work on going under or thru. A good farm dog and a .270 Browning have worked well here for coyote control.

LOL , I posted earlier about making something like that out of PVC . Got the idea from seeing a bird feeder equiped with rollers to dump squirrels . WOW ....... PVC would get cashy ; but $5 per foot on top of the cost of a fence ?

Aircraft grade tubing or cheaper, galvanized conduit would work well. You might even find junked chain-link fence tubing and rig it. I still like a good, hot fence charger tho. No good for birds tho, just climbers.

an 8 foot fence (or even a 6 foot) with a string of hot wire at the top and at the bottom close to the ground would be way more effective and a ton cheaper. 5 foot...please

my parents boxer can jump a 5 foot fence when he is out playing. a coyote thats starving will be even more motovated then that.

mom'sfolly :

PVC around some sort of roll, maybe wooden dowls. The PVC would spin around the dowl. It might not be as slippery as polished aluminum but it would be lots cheaper.

If you took 2 brackets for mounting curtain rods, a length of clothing dowel for closets, and 2" pvc pipe, you could make a very effective system. Take it a step further, put round head screws into the dowel first so the pvc rests on them, making it more slick. Hmmmm.....
