East Coast pita pintas! How fabulous! Congratulations.

Thank you Guys! I took them outside to their small run to chat with my EO today. Boy, they grow so fast. I had to raise the plate all the way for them to be comfortable under it.
They all have yellow legs and beaks, which I think is most desirable? Sorry I sent two identical pictures. I will send more when they are older. They are very white in the daylight. In the pictures I sent yesterday, they looked yellow. Anyway, Happy Pita Pintas, I think!

The beak will get darker as they get older. The yellow legs are great!

Over then next couple of molts, they will get mostly black with white tipped feathers.

So, I had another defect pop up in my Pita Pinta. I have a chick with no tail. It is not only missing tail feathers, but has a rounded rump with no tail. A couple years ago, we had a splash Langshan hatch at the farm that had no tail. She was so cute but not what we were trying to breed!

My list of Pita Pinta defects keeps growing.

It seems more like a congenital mutation and not inherited. It it was inherited, we would see more than one.

In other words, it is like cross beak or a chicken that hatches without an eye. Not genetic but a mutation or replication problem and not going to be passed on to new generations.

Thanks for sharing this info. I've hatched a lot of Pita Pinta (200ish) and this is the first one with this defect. Here is my defect count. It seems like there was something else but I can't recall what it is.

Rumpless 1
Blue Eyes 1
Cross Beak 2
White legs 10-15
Crooked keels ??? We processed 6-8 cockerels and I found 2 pullets in my breeding flock and another 1 in my laying flock

I would tend to agree but once you have it in the chicken it looks to be inheritable.

Seems to be a mutation that can occur in most all chicken breeds but the cause of the mutation is unknown.

Definitely do not breed with rumpless chickens. It does not indicated that rumpless faults are in the gene pool for them though.
