I also prefer to move the male. We only "confine" our hens for breeding for two weeks. It isn't any more cruel than cooping a hen for handling practice for a show or confinement for health issue, etc.

Next month, when I get K1N, code name Neptune, back from Anne, I'll have two breeding pens already set up. Neptune will spend a few days with P13 and then a days with P24 and back and forth for two weeks.

These pullets are laying 6 eggs per week. So in two weeks of breeding, I should be able to collect 24 eggs from single mating to K1N, Neptune. If I need to extend for week 3, I will, but don't have any plans on doing so, if all goes well.

24 eggs should give me 20 live chicks from those matings and that's all I can handle.

These will be my prized matings for the year. Keepers. None of these eggs will be sold.

These boys are THICK from one end to the other. I notice they have the same toenails even... I've contemplated trimming those side nails a little so his toes don't turn. I've noticed the girls I have from those lines also have those turned toes/toenails. Do the judges look at such things when you folks show birds? I think it just looks uncomfy...makes me wanna trim them for them.

is that the barred your talking about fred
Breeding is breeding, regardless. But yes, I was discussing the Barred Rocks. I try to keep my non-Rock comments to myself. hahahaha

But seriously, this isn't a Reds thread, not even a flock management, health issues, predators, diseases or other kind of thread. Goodness knows, BYC has a ton of those threads already, No shortage from which to pick!!. Side track stuff gets thrown in once in awhile, which is fine, but we always and quickly try to pull the focus back to breeding Plymouth Rocks.

That is what this thread is all about and only about.
