I have a few Delawares from The Garry Farm--Bargain here on BYC I shipped hatched from her eggs. Her parent stock look Nothing like the above birds. I woke up to 3 of Fred's Hens Barred Rocks this morning. I had 4 in lockdown but could see the 4th one had a very bad air cell so it was a late quitter. Anyhoot, I hope I get 1 M-2 F--LOL. Thank you Fred.

We have few if any Heritage Breeds in this part of the country--if y'all can help me a bit I am dead serious about promoting and distributing these Heritage Breeds. I'm a newbie for sure but I am eager and smart--and very determined! As I only have babies its going to be awhile!

The Delawares you got from Nancy are descended from the male in my avatar. She's had generations hatch since then, but Isaac is the father of her line. Agreed that the Delawares are still in dire need and they are a challenging breed to get right.

Yes, I do have big Ike. He's going on 6 years old now. He's one of the best tempered roosters you'll ever want to have so you should get some fine birds out of those. He has his minor faults, of course, but has produced some very fine sons and daughters.

Dottie's chicks are over two weeks old now and I have one chick with very crisp, bright barring out of the three barred chicks. The head spot seems to be the smallest at first glance, however, if you really look closer, you'll see the barest hint of frosting on either side of the back of the head, so that main head spot could be deceiving. Its comb is a bit arched and the stance makes me wonder if this is my cockerel out of the three barred chicks. What do you think? I'm very pleased with the barring I'm seeing on this chick so far! Two of the barred chicks are Dottie's and one is out of Wynette. All four of these first pics are the same chick. Can't wait to see how it continues to feather out.










Others with it-see the chick in question on the far right? Gosh, it carries itself like a cockerel.

Here I was thinking I had three pullets, but that head spot is really deceiving unless you look closely at it. That plus the comb shape and general overall attitude/ carriage of this one tells me you could be right. If this is my boy and he develops into what I hope, I have to find a way for him to stay. Rex may have to make some room over there on his side of the coop until I can figure out a better arrangement. I'm thinking Isaac probably isn't going to stand for another barred bird in his section.

I've decided that the Black Rock pullets with these will be sold so if anyone is interested in them, let me know. They'd have to be picked up here.

I thought Isaac would have to adjust when I had Rex's huge, nicely barred brother, Indy, but he killed him with a lucky shot to the back. Isaac never liked the barred hens and sure didn't take to a big male who looked just like them who was also bypassing him in size. He barely tolerates Deacon, but Deacon mostly flies out and roams the property all day so he doesn't really have to deal with him much except when they're locked inside together. That's why Ike has the Blue Rocks and the Delawares and the two Easter Eggers on his side of the coop and Rex has all the barred hens. Picky rooster, that one.

I will keep you posted on this little one. If this is a really nicely barred cockerel with a good temperament, and I would be shocked if he was the least bit human aggressive, then this could be my guy to put over the Stukel Rock hens rather than Rex if I want to get back to where I was.
