Congratulations to Scott Brazinski, Yard Full 'o Rocks. The Sunshine Classic - Florida today.
Scott was the breeder of these winning birds. Congrats to the owner/shower Holly McConnell as well. Those birds must have been wonderfully conditioned.

OK I need some thoughts and input. Next Dec there is a possibility of a show that will have a meat pen class. There will be an open class offered but it is geared more towards 4H kids raising cornish cross birds.

I think it's also a great way to promote our heritage DP birds. I have not had my Rocks long enough to really know the best time to hatch for this show, so would love some input here.

In reading old poultry books it seems that this type of class was very common at shows around the turn of the century, would be nice for it to make a come back.

My CX would so kick butt in that class!!

Wish it would happen here.

Mary, what show will this be, where will it be held?

Congrats Holly...

Holly is one of my closest chicken buds, glad to see all her work pay off.

Congrats to Scott as well, you have brought these birds a long way since you have had them. Bob would be proud.

Thanks Matt

Holly did all the hard work! I certainly can't take credit for any of that. Pullets came from a carton of eggs that Colby (my youngest) and I brought to Bob at the Newnan show last year. It is SO nice to have another person, especially nearby, serious about the variety. I need all the help I can get!!

Your comment about Bob was something Holly and I were texting about Sunday after church. My goal was to make him proud he entrusted that original trio to me.....I hope he's looking down with a big smile. I'll forever be in his debt...."Bob, I'm still going down the middle of the road"

Bob and I talked about the progress of the Rocks a few days before he passed. It's funny how me having the rocks all came about. I'm sure Bob is smiling in heaven at the thought. I have to say that this has been a real learning experience for me. But I have grown to love these birds and have to thank Scott and Matt for all the help and advice. But really the credit goes to Scott for breeding such cool birds.

Talking AZ National Livestock show probably next Dec. I'm not sure if it's always starting the day after Christmas; will have to check what the dates will be. Was chatting with Angie Hawkins Whitehead over on the Arizona Poultry Organization facebook page.

These pics don't do these two birds justice. They are 10 months old and are from Scott's (Yard Full O' Rocks) line. Etowah Valley Columbian Rocks! Can't wait to see what another months growth does for them.

Well.....it's TIME!!

Breeding pens were set up Sunday after church and collection of eggs has begun. ONLY SINGLE MATINGS this year. Time to dial it in

I am using one of my two cockbirds from last yr, Jack, over
Pen 1 - #43 hen (great color and a tail that is a tad too high....hoping to get males with better tails here)
Pen 2 - #54 hen "Bigfoot". She's a big all 'round gal with plenty of front end. A tad too loosely feather, but great type, balance and size
Pen 4 - #21 pullet. The BEST pullet that Jack sired last year and in my opinion the best all around pullet I've raised yet. She has color, size and type....and much tighter feather!
Pen X (extra) - #24 pullet. 2nd best pullet from last season. Color not quite as good as #21, but aside from that, equally as good

Going to collect this way for about 3 weeks, setting eggs every Saturday.

After 3 weeks, ladies get a break from Jack for about 10 days, then Chief, the best cockerel from 2013 will be mated to each of these females for another 3 week collection

Here's to a great 2014 hatching season!!
