This is when we envy those who can proceed this early in the calendar year. I hatched on Christmas and again in January last year. No more of that. Winter is just too hard and the electric bill for brooding too steep.

We still have a whole lot of winter left up here. We'll start in So KY next month and in March up here. Best we can do.

Take the lead Scott. We're cheering for you. We'll catch up after while.

Well.....it's TIME!!

Breeding pens were set up Sunday after church and collection of eggs has begun. ONLY SINGLE MATINGS this year. Time to dial it in

I am using one of my two cockbirds from last yr, Jack, over
Pen 1 - #43 hen (great color and a tail that is a tad too high....hoping to get males with better tails here)
Pen 2 - #54 hen "Bigfoot". She's a big all 'round gal with plenty of front end. A tad too loosely feather, but great type, balance and size
Pen 4 - #21 pullet. The BEST pullet that Jack sired last year and in my opinion the best all around pullet I've raised yet. She has color, size and type....and much tighter feather!
Pen X (extra) - #24 pullet. 2nd best pullet from last season. Color not quite as good as #21, but aside from that, equally as good

Going to collect this way for about 3 weeks, setting eggs every Saturday.

After 3 weeks, ladies get a break from Jack for about 10 days, then Chief, the best cockerel from 2013 will be mated to each of these females for another 3 week collection

Here's to a great 2014 hatching season!!

Do you, are anyone really have pics of your single mating pens?

I am in the process of building a WALL of single pens and would love to see someone's set up. I am trying to remember how Jerry Foley had his set up but would LOVE to see others.

How do you keep predators out?

I need some smaller pens like that for trios.

I am building some mostly for spare roos and quarantine but I could use them for single matings too. They are 28 inches wide and 41 inches long and 28 inches tall. Our shop came with some metal racks (used for tires) so we are going to put 4 cages on each shelf and we are only going to use 2 shelves.

Similar to what Scott uses.

We have to multi use things like this. After breeding season, these little tractor make nice juvie grow out pens. The one shown is one I built up here. Frankly it is way, way overkill in weight, but it is secure and safe. In KY we built a half dozen very light weight models. Slightly smaller but used 2x2 to save weight and used light weight steel to wrap the shelter end. Anyone can pick them up and move them. I move the heavy one with bucket on the tractor, an Orange tractor with diesel engine, type tractor.

Casey County. 2 hour drive from you. I'll meet down there next month. The boys told me they saved my two choices. Of course, the Old Man is still there. He's only 2 1/2 years old. There should be his two brothers as well if they weren't put on a platter for Sunday dinner. LOL

These would all be pure XW/GSBR males.
