This is when we envy those who can proceed this early in the calendar year. I hatched on Christmas and again in January last year. No more of that. Winter is just too hard and the electric bill for brooding too steep.

We still have a whole lot of winter left up here. We'll start in So KY next month and in March up here. Best we can do.

Take the lead Scott. We're cheering for you. We'll catch up after while.

Our temps right now are insane. It's been a week in the 40's and 50's. Our basement is flooding from all the melting snow.

But I still love our January thaw despite the flooding. Nice and warm. That's no jacket weather!
Do you, are anyone really have pics of your single mating pens?

I am in the process of building a WALL of single pens and would love to see someone's set up. I am trying to remember how Jerry Foley had his set up but would LOVE to see others.

I'm using these for now. Tops are sectioned off, but I have removable dividers. This room is heated to 50 degrees. It's all insulated (doors are insulated as well). Heat won't leak. It doesn't actually raise my bill too much. I need it to keep my water from freezing anyway.

There are 3 pens up top. 3 x 4 feet. I keep pairs in there for MY hatching only.

I also have:

4x4 pens = 16 square feet. Depending on the size of what I'm breeding I usually put 3 or 4 in here. There are roosts and nest boxes just under the windows now.

Note: if you stack pens... don't do it too high.. My brooders are too high.. I wish they were a foot lower. :(

I know what you mean about stacking too high. I have a 4 level brooder and rarely use the top (need a step to get to it) or the bottom ( I have to get on my bum knees)

These are only going to be 2 high. The bottom one is knee high and the top will be low enough I can reach the food easy. I want to use Nipples in these with a big 5 gallon tank for the water. I will post pics As I go along. We have spent most of the day trying to figure out how to make it work

and in turn hubby is getting frustrated and is going to give up if we don't make some progress today.

I only need to get one row done today. Not sure how to make easy doors. They may be the hardest thing at this point.

Does this help you with doors at all?

They are made out of 2x2s

Stopped by the Northeast Poultry Congress yesterday and saw lots of nice birds.

In LF Barred Plymouth Rocks, Richard Blackman of Maine got BV with his pullet, and Guy Roy got RV with his cockerel.

Sorry I didn't get pics of the other varieties. Best American was a Dominique, and Reserve was a white Wyandotte.

Also stopped by the club booth and meet Richard Hickman and John Beauchamp. The Rock National Meet will be at this event in 2015.
