As for Plymouth Rocks....you'll need to decided on a variety. White, Barred, Silver Penciled, Buff, etc.

If you're wanting a huge challenge, go with the Silver Penciled, please! We can definitely use more good breeders of that variety!

Wow. Thank you all for the great advice and resources. I will look forward to reading all that I can. Barred Rocks is what I think I want to start with. Do most of y'all sell hatching eggs from your lines?

Shipping eggs is a risky business, no matter what. It isn't the breaking of eggs as much as the jostling they take from mechanized handling. They also get put through some temperature extremes as the cargo areas are not climate controlled. Do most of us ship eggs? Yes.

But it is important to understand the risks and importance to rest the eggs for a day and do not turn the eggs for an additional day or two. These and other tricks help improve the hatch rate a bit.

I shipped just now.. Warming up tomorrow. I put heat packs in there (hand warmers). It doesn't have far to go.. but I am still nervous about it. I packaged it to perfection I must say. Nothing is moving even a little bit. Postal worker told me they will keep the package at the post office and send out a pickup mail card or call them that morning.

Also, first BPR of the season. I hatched two out of two eggs I set for testing.

Could be the photo.....BUT, this chick already has the appearance of good leg width (spacing)!!

Congrats on that first chick, Justine! I agree w/Scott...looks like a nice leg width to me as well.

I am heading to the post office in about a half hour to send my first shipped eggs of the year. I'm not using any warmers...I've never found that I needed them. These eggs are going from Michigan to PA; hopefully, they'll do alright.

Hi All,

I am like Jermoatc. I have had my layer flock for three years - different interesting breeds I purchased from a hatchery and/or the feed store. Last year I purchased Araucanas from various good breeders and am going to start breeding those this spring.

However, I am interested in a second, more "traditional" breed of bird to breed and I am in love with the Partridge color. I have looked at the attributes of the various breeds and I like what I read and see about the Plymouth Rocks. I am ordering some Partridge Plymouth Rock chicks from Dick Horstman to come in April so there are less problems with shipping.

I have a lot to learn and I will be asking lots and lots of questions. I appreciate that you are all so willing to share knowledge in this breed. I am looking forward to following this group.

Glad to hear that, Vickie! With having a few years under your belt, you're definitely ready to take on a more serious breeding endeavor! KUDOS, and glad you picked Rocks!
