Below is a nest box I got from my father. I gathered eggs out of this nest box over 30 years ago when it was in my fathers poultry house. This nest box is in the "Padgett" breeding pen #2. :)

HEY!!! How is your hatch going?????

I buy Tucker Milling Feed it is pork based and 22% protein. They are a small company and not looking to grow too fast. They don't sell to BIG name stores like TSC my Coop only carries a few things but can order most anything.... but they are too HIGH. I buy from a small family run feed store and they are GREAT.... and hour away but great people.

ADM also makes a meat base poultry feed that I use. It's called Pen Pals Meat Maker and is 22% protein.

Thanks Rip.....

Many folks are not in the SE and its good to know a source for another animal based feed source!! Just looked online, but their dealer locator is down. ADM is SOOOO big, I'd think they would distribute product all over

Just had another thought about this years chicks.....I switched from using "light bulbs" as a heat source in the brooder to those ceramic heater bulbs (used for reptiles, etc) that do not give off any light, just heat. My hopes were to train the chicks about daylight/dark, sleeping patterns, etc that are typically messed up by brooder lights.

I wonder if the change in heat source might have had a positive effect on the growth curve in addition to the feed change??

Those folks who shop at Family Farm and Home chain of stores, in the upper midwest, take a look at the Turkey/Game Bird feeds they sell. Pork is the 3rd ingredient. Animal protein products are getting harder and harder to find, but Family Farm still stocks these Armada brand specialty feeds.

Armada's standard chick starter and Layer formulas are vegetarian, sadly.

Every time I see photos of nice nests I cringe a little bit.  I've been promising myself I'd build some nice new boxes ever since I finished building our barn 4 years ago.  Still haven't.  Heavy sigh.

Hi Fred, both breeding pens have nest boxes now I am just waiting on eggs. The pullets are two weeks from being 6 months old so I expect them to start laying next month. I am definitely ready to start hatching eggs so I can start to see if the selective breeding decisions I made were the right ones. :)
