Let's use this pullet, by way of example. She's an F1 that didn't make the breeding pen, but she'll lay eggs in the barn for the table.



Let's say she's all I had, or she's was so fantastic in every other way? (the bird above isn't fantastic in every other way, she's just being the model here)

I'm an old timer, but not at chicken breeding, ask me about... well never mind. She looks pretty good to me. What's wrong with her?

I don't mean to jump in front of Fred as this is a bird of his breeding

Nothing major "wrong" with her....but if you compare her to the Standard, her back slopes downward from front to back. The standard requires a long, flat back (i.e. no downward slope)

It could just be the picture and how she was standing at the time...but I don't like her tail or chest either. One is pinched and the other looks a little flat...but, again, she could just be walking with her neck stretched out towards something.

Exactly. She's actually a wonderful bird. She's now laying and is delightful in every way. But she didn't make the cut for the breeding pen precisely because of that down hill, rainy day back line. Hope that helps. That bird just behind her? Wish I had a decent photo of her. She turned out great and IS in the breeding pen right now.

The reality is that we discovered through mating records that there was a single hen who was throwing these rainy day little females. Shrug. She gone.

I concur on the tail....seems most rainy day backed birds narrow at the tail, and thus the tails are pinched. It think the old cliche holds true "function follows form"

I think the front end on her is probably ok, she looks a bit "stretched out" in the neck to me

Experience talking. Yes, lots of birds photograph oddly, especially at that age. Yes, she's stretching, most likely toward something. Her front end filled in fantastic!! BTW. Her tail blossomed as well. Again, she's an awesome layer house bird. I like a lot. But… that rainy day thing? THAT doesn't just go away, as a rule. If you see it early? You'll most likely see it later on too.

OH, and cushions. If you see those early? Chances a very good they get nothing but worse with maturity. Just my experience with my birds.

This thread is dedicated to the Standard of Perfection, bred to that standard, Plymouth Rocks, all varieties. This is a great thread, but a brutally honest thread, designed for those who are dedicated to breeding the best Rocks possible and appreciating poultry shows as means by which the breeder's efforts can be judged and evaluated by peers.

This specific aspect and target purpose hopefully holds interest to you. There are several threads on BYC dedicated to Plymouth Rocks, each with their own thread goals and purposes. Again, welcome.
