The Plymouth Rock Breeders thread

Well, Cyn, you've made what a few of us have already chatted about. How to make a true Black Rock with yellow legs. That's what you've done here. Although the APA has bantam Black Rocks, the large fowl still await development and acceptance.

I understand the UK does have the Black Rock in large fowl. I'm unsure about other countries.

Congratulations on those chicks. If you put together a bird that conforms to the Standard of a Rock is a Rock. The fact that they are 3/4 is irrelevant. What is relevant is whether they meet the Plymouth Rock Standard and first, they need to breed true. I"d love some!!! Like I need another Rock in my head, eh?
Fred

A guy from Cumming, Ga came and bought all my "black chicks" today (13 of them)....they are a result of Jack over Madea (my 1/2 barred, 1/2 Col gal who is black phenotype)....he is moving to Crossville, TN and is going to try to get a "solid black Rock" going....with 13 that are split E/eb he should be off to a decent start. two of the males at 3 weeks old were HUGE. Cyn, if you need any "blacks" I'll have a few more in the next couple hatches
These chicks had a lot of black "wash" on the legs, not yella like Cyns

I believe a true Rock, a true Black Rock with yellow legs and a complete absence of white feathers would be a difficult challenge. Scott showed a nice black pullet some time back that pleases my eye.

Blues ARE accepted, if I remember correctly. * reaching over to look in the Big Grey Book.

Yup, accepted in Kansas City, 1920

Well now. That's a fun sounding project. I wish him the very best at this endeavor.

Does the world even need another variety? Some would say no. Some of the accepted varieties of the Rocks are in desperate shape and diluting the breed even further does no good, so say they.
But, they recognize Blue's.....which you CANNOT get without also getting black since blue does not breed true....its weird to me that they don't recognize both as they do in bantams

Here are the others that came from the same hens with Rex.
Pullet, and she is quite large at 6 wks

I think a pullet, 5 wks old.

Ice blue cockerel

Blue barred cockerel

And there is a blue pullet as well, but can't find a photo of her.

And Tyrannosaurus Rex, LOL. He's huge.

Rex over Blue Plymouth Rock hens got me several non-barred birds, including a blue pullet, two black pullets and this little guy. Look at the space between his legs already. He's almost 4 weeks old. Since they are 3/4 Plymouth Rock and look like Rocks, I feel okay calling them Rocks. There's only that pesky 1/4 Delaware in there.

.... and those FEET! Hugemongous! Wow!

Blues are recognized in LF Fred, BUT....not Blacks....go figure
That's how it is with Andalusians too. Neither black nor splash are recognized and you need both! Doesn't make sense to me but I don't have the money (room/feed) nor the time to try and get them admitted.

Actually, Scott, I will be selling these. I'm hatching some out of Rex over his Stukel aunts and mother so hope to get one that is even better barred than Indy was. That is what I gave to Dottie when she went broody 11 days ago. Two are Dottie's, one is Wynette's, one is Ida's (mother of both Rex and Indy) and one is unknown which BR hen it was, could be Dru's.

This one, if the white feathers dissipate. Nice bird. Legs will be yellow and the head is gorgeous.
Appreciate the assessment, Fred. I hope it's a pullet. Another week should tell. She is almost identical to her younger brother, who also had quite a bit of white on him at first, and doesn't have the comb he does, but with the BBS Rocks, I find the cockerels don't always pop up that comb as fast as the barreds do for some reason. If it is a pullet, someone could have a Black Rock pair out of them. I think they have different mothers. Rex is definitely the sire of most all my chicks. I did get a couple of Delaware colored ones that were obviously sired by the Dellie X cockerel before he was rehomed, but Rex's kids so far have that stocky build we love.

Here are two other pictures of that same chick in the photo above:
