I totally believe you speckledhen.

These two have been going at it since they were just wee little chicks. It was pretty shocking at first. The EE actually attacked one of the pullets this morning when she was sleeping. Unfortunately I can only keep one roo at most, and chances are it won't be the barred rock. Maybe I can talk my neighbor into taking him since he's very sweet.

I didn't candle at all, I figured the broody hen doesn't, so what the heck. I have never had trouble with the clears left in; guess I feel different if one broke.
I remember as a kid, finding an egg that was very light weighted and suspect. I broke it on a rock, and the explosion of stuff hit my shoe. I thought I would have to toss the shoes; really smelly.

I have never had an infertile or otherwise unhatchable chicken egg blow up in the incubator. Guinea & waterfowl eggs are an other matter. Those I'm vigilant about. You only need to have one blow up once to make you not want it to happen again.

Heard an expression the other day. Helicopter parents. hahaha There are myriads of incubating threads here on BYC.

To read those threads you're left with the impression that most backyard hobbyists way overdo the whole candling thing. If that's what they want to do or feel the need to do, that's fine. Perhaps this is their hobby; setting, candling, and fussing and "locking down"(sic) all this stuff. I don't have the time nor the felt need to do all this candling.

Once, at 12 days and pull the clears. That's about it. The less handling the better is my view.

Agreed. Candle once mid-way 7 THEN LEAVE THEM ALONE. The more handling the greater the liklihood of problems.

Gotta say I sure wish it was as easy as just watching behavior! Would make this sexing thing a ton easier. Sorry your other one turned out to be a male.

What y'all think about this one?
I’m not a poultry Judge and don’t play one on TV, (or the internet). Overall he is a very nice cockerel.
There might be something going on in his tail coverts or it might just be shadows through the woods, if it’s not shadows, find HENS with NO cushions. His tail feathers are very wide, wing carriage good, fluff feathers straight and well defined, probably all the way to the base. Those are some of the things hardest to get/keep on a BPR. He is tall in the hocks and shanks, which make him look just a little short in the back but he’s really not. I also bet that line can hold its own in the skillet. Like I said, he is a very nice cockerel.
Got any barred pullet porn?
