I would love to see a picture of this rooster with a lighter back ground. I am using this thread to learn what a barred rock is supposed to be. I love my hatchery BR hens. But these heritage BR make me drool :)
I sold this bird about 7 months ago when he was only around 4 months old. I saw this pic and called and said I need to borrow him for a little while. Hopefully I'll be getting him back to do some breedings.

Reminder: Folks, please refrain from using "rooster" - the appropriate terms are:

male under one year: cockerel (or K)
male over a year: cock bird (or C)
female under one year: pullet (or P)
female over one year: hen (or H)

Really? Well, I guess I can't participate here...didn't know there were rules for posting to the thread... because I just can't bring myself to keep saying cock bird, even though it's the vernacular and it's proper, some folks can't avoid a life time of conditioning. Sorry....it just sounds too....fowl.

Just use a C, then! That's easy, and if you're participating in this section, it's expected that folks use the proper terminology. It took me a good while, too (I think it's easier for men to say it than women....) Also, here's the note posted at the very top of this section - note the 2nd to last paragraph:

The Exhibition and Breeding to the Standard of Perfection forum has been created for those with breeder quality stock to have more serious poultry discussions. This includes discussions on breeding to the standard, genetics, exhibition, breeding strategies, breeding for specific traits, etc.

It’s Staff’s desire to moderate this forum with an eye toward consideration that many of the folks participating here are longtime breeders who may write in a down-to-earth and non-sugar-coated way; this certainly doesn’t mean that, when posting here, the Rules do not apply. This is simply meant to advise folks new to this forum that, for example, if they ask a question about a picture they just posted of a bird from their flock, they should expect a straightforward answer, taken from the viewpoint of someone who is breeding exhibition fowl.

We do not want this section to be a competition among breeders but, rather, a collaborative effort to further the breed they are working with. BYC is a very diverse community, and this section will be no different. Poultry judges, experienced breeders, and those new to breeding are all welcome, and all have something to contribute to this forum.

Participants are encouraged to understand and use the terminology found in the APA Standard of Perfection and avoid usage of terminology that might be considered "slang" in the poultry world.

This section is not intended for discussion of pet birds or birds bred/sold by hatcheries; conversations in regard to these birds and flocks should take place in the General Breed Discussions and FAQ section.

Thank you for your response! I did not mean to insult him by referring to him as a rooster.

Perhaps when you get him back, then you will be so kind as to post another picture of him?

Sorry, couldn't help it. Women must have dirty minds as I never gave it a second thought. When forums were pretty new we had to say old male because the program would not allow dirty words, and I think that would be fine as well as C. I don't think the Mods are trying to be overly technical, when you are breeding for quality, it really does make a difference whether you're using Cs or Ks, Hs or Ps. In my Father's world, Ks were called fryers and Cs didn't exist.
