The Plymouth Rock Breeders thread

Can we all agree that rules are rules, that there are acceptable work-arounds ("male," "female") for those who prefer other words, and that the discussion is about Plymouth Rocks? (ducking)

I know it's no loss to y'all if we don't post here and it's probably even a big relief, but this egghead, pedantic crap is just what turns people off of even going into breeding seriously...the people with whom you have to deal. If the sticking point is merely the words you use, you've relegated "serious" to blow hard folks who think using the correct terminology makes them seem more informed and dedicated to the craft. Oh, please! Life is too, too short to split hairs and take one's self so seriously, let alone dump that OCD on other folks too.

Let me spell it out for you...this is a chicken forum. It's chickens. Not world hunger, war, cancer research or even rocket science...it's an animal that is used for food, primarily, and for your hobby as a secondary use. Hobbies, by pure definition, are not a serious thing but a side pursuit for folks with too much time and money on their hands. If you want to pretend that your hobby is of great importance and requires "correct" words or it will offend you, then you may want to take a step back and look at the world around you. There are many, many offensive things in this world...many.... but the word rooster is just not one of them. Only here, where folks are engaged in a bird hobby.

Actually, I doubt very seriously if the words you use about your breeding have any bearing whatsoever on the stock you produce. If so, you all would have show birds popping out of every egg. Proper terminology has it's place........., when explaining something technical to those in the same profession,
The words I use are nothing more than a way to communicate with other breeders, that’s the point. The birds those words represent (not just K, C, but hackle, saddle, coverts etc) is the only thing that has a bearing on the stock I produce. Also, I’m not embarrassed by the birds that pop out of my eggs.

Well at least I know what are poping out of them.. :) many do not lol... never heard of or read of so many "sports" any where in the world but here lol

I think the way we breed is just like the old saying of "Like produces Like" ... If we all simply treat each other with respect that will be returned... but we should be all Pro's here.... If using terms like, line breeding, standard or single mating, trapped nested and stud mating throw you then learn them .... I did... "The Mating and Breeding of Poultry", Harry M. Lamon abd Rob R. Slocum ... 1920....
there's a reason it's still in print :)

Have a great one

Let me spell it out for you...
No need to "spell it out" - if you don't care for what we have asked folks to adhere to in this section, move on.

You don't have to post here. If you choose to, know that there are expectations; you don't have to follow them, the police aren't going to knock on your door & arrest you for saying "rooster," but if it offends you so much, then simply move on to another thread.

To me the moderators of this thread have a lot more to worry about then what term someone uses to identify or classify their bird whether it is rooster cock pullet hen female purple or green does not matter. I have one I call tiny. This thread gets off topic about other breeds quite often maybe that issue is where the moderator should spend their time and energy enforcing on this thread about PLYMOUTH ROCKS not chasing silly things that have absolutely no bearing on any thing genetic or the quality of birds produce. At the end of the day this thread should be a tool to help people produce the best rock they can and nothing else.

The point is that Rooster is a general term for a male chicken and Cock, Hen, Cockerel and Pullet are age specific which is of significance to a lot of people as far as breeding goes and you also would expect a bird to look differently at these different ages. If you post a picture and say "What do you guys think about my Rooster" and the bird looks a little thin and not filled out then it may appear that it is not a very good "Rooster" but if you state up front that it is a Cockerel then the evaluation that you get may be completely different because we know up front that it is a young bird. I don't care either way but I don't see what the big deal is with using the correct terminology.

As far as the people that say that they don't want to say the word "Cock"....grow up folks we aren't in 5 grade any more. Cock is used several times in the bible and is the proper name for a male chicken over 1 year old. Whatever else your dirty little minds tries to turn it into is your fault.

Beekissed, you are complaining about the fact that Show People can be critical yet you have said some pretty negative things about Show People as well. You can't lump all people into one group.. the way you are talking about the Show People is no better than what you are complaining about.

I have Duckworth line BR, new this year. I am looking forward to processing the cockerels, because I believe that this line would be represenative of what can be accomplished in terms of meat qualities for a true heritage breed. Out of respect for the new forum organization, which thread(s) would be the most appropriate thread(s) for these pictures and discussion? This group would know the most about BR and breeding BR, but I am not so sure what the interest would be in this discussion.

Thanks,

Mark

Looks to me like it belongs in this thread. I'd love to see this years Duckworth line.
